Reflections for Police Officer Jacob Candanoza

I trained Candanoza a few months ago. He was a great guy and I looked forward to getting to know him better. I’m sad I won’t get that chance. I hope to be able to honor him each day and do what I can to help his family.

"Somebody killed a policeman today,
And a part of America died.
A piece of our country he swore to protect
Will be buried with him at his side.
The suspect who shot him will stand up in court,
With counsel demanding his rights,
While a young widowed mother must work for her kids
And spend alone many long nights.
The beat that he walked was a battlefield, too,
Just as if he'd gone off to war.
Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half mast,
To his name they will add a gold star.
Yes, somebody killed a policeman today,
It happened in your town or mine.
While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors,
A cop put his life on the line.
Now, his ghost walks a beat on a dark city street,
And he stands at each new rookie's side.
He answered the call and gave us his all,
And a part of America died."

Lord our God, You are always faithful and quick to show mercy. Our Brother-In-Blue, Police Officer Jacob Candanoza, of the Terrell TX Police Department, was suddenly and violently taken from us; Shot & Killed in the Line-of-Duty. Come swiftly to his aid, have mercy on him, and comfort his family, friends, and colleagues by the power and protection of the cross. I pray this through Jesus Christ our Lord, and by His authority. Amen.

God's Mission for Law Enforcement:

"For the policeman does not frighten people who are doing right; but those doing evil will always fear him. So if you don't want to be afraid, keep the laws and you will get along well. The policeman is sent by God to help you. But if you are doing something wrong, of course you should be afraid, for he will have you punished. He is sent by God for that very purpose." [Romans 13:3-4 TLB]

Scripture Verses of Support, Comfort, and Hope:

"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God." [Matthew 5:9 CSB]

"Then I heard the voice of the Lord asking: Who will I send? Who will go for us? I said: Here I am. Send me." [Isaiah 6:8 CSB]

"No one has greater love than this: to lay down his life for his friends." [John 15:13 CSB]

"Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted." [Matthew 5:4 CSB]
