Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Stuart Edward Holt

Boulder County Sheriff’s Officer Stuart Holt (595) was my father. He was a doting dad to his only child, who also taught me about hard work, sacrifice, and doing the right thing even when no one is watching.

He won 2 life saving medals in his career, one of which was at CU Boulder, protecting students from a man with a knife. Two years later I went to school there, knowing I had the best security on campus.

I moved to LA and my Dad drove the moving truck, believing as he always did in my big dreams. The first movie I made, was about his experience as an Army Ranger back from war and how hard it is to leave your family behind. I realized later that while I admired those I saw on the big screen, none of them ever became the hero he was to me.

I think of my Dad every day and miss his advice and his encouragement. While my 2 sons won’t ever know him, his eldest grandchild will be coming with me to the dedication. My Dad used to talk about a DC trip we’d take. So this one is in his honor. My oldest son Dawson Edward is named for him. Dawson for the movie my dad took me to at 7, which inspired my career and Edward which was my Dad’s middle name.

We miss you Dad.

I had the privilege to hire Stuart when he applied at the Boulder County Sheriff's Office. He was a dedicated officer and always stepped up to cover staffing when needed. He worked in the mountains, the flats, and suburban areas of Boulder County. He was generous in spirit and committed to professionalism. He left the U.S. Army as a Major and changed his career to serve the people of Boulder County and Colorado.

It is with deep sorrow to add his name to the Memorial Wall in Washington D.C., but as part of the Police Unity Tour Team Colorado we will be present for the formal roll call of the fallen.

Stuart, my brother—it has been a long time since we worked together, but I still think of the calls we went on together and the conversations we had at shift change. I think of you often.
