"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

It is stories like yours that inspired me to join federal law enforcement; not to avenge, but to carry on your good fight. Thank you for your service, and may God bless you, your family, and your friends.

Be at ease knowing that you made the world, just a little bit safer, something that all officers want to achieve on the job.

Sir,

You were a legend before my time, I was only 8 when you were brutally taken from family and friends. You, along with other dedicated officers and officials, fought selflessly to defeat the rise of drugs in America and to make children (like me) safe.
Three years ago, my oldest sister died from DUI of narcotics when she struck a pole. Like her, some family members have banished me, for a lack of a better word, because I am an officer who supports the beliefs you fought for.
Camarena Family, thank-you for your sacrifices, many of which we will never know of. You are respected to this day, and will never be forgotten...my fellow officer and Marine. Semper Fi.

Watching the news reports of your murder in 1985 affected me deeply. As a young recent college graduate, your story inspired me to choose federal law enforcement as my career. It's heroes like you that still make me proud to wear the badge everyday. God bless you and your family. RIP hermano.

A true hero---you are what all agents strive to be. You are what young men and women see when they hear the word Special Agent---your death changed our agency, and we are better for it. Thank you so much for your sacrifice...

Often, in the evening, I reflect on
those who make our world a safer place.
Those men and women on patrol, 24 hours
a day, year in, year out. Sometimes, I
raise a glass in a silent toast for those on patrol, and those who gave us, the citizens, their ultimate sacrifice.
Rest in peace, Enrique "Kiki" Camarena.

Agent Camarena, I thank you for your sacrifice and your family's sacrifice.
As I watched the news about your death and torture in 1985 I knew then that my calling in life would be in law enforcement. As I turned 37 (last year) and myself with three children I can only imagine the sacrifice you gave and your family gave as well. Sir, I salute you! My family thanks you!

You will not be forgotten sir. You did a job that most people would not even think about. This story bothers me because the brutal murderers that did this have "rights" and the police did not!! Do you think the murderers thought about "rights" when they murdered Agent Camarena? NO!! May you rest in peace sir!!!!!

UNDERCOVER
No crisp uniform of honor did he wear
Nor golden badge of glory did his chest bear
Only troubling thoughts of money, guns and drugs
Fighting back the tears as he collected his nightly hugs

In this secret life he chose, he clearly was the best
But his uneasy path was much different then the rest
He knelt in prayer with his family at night
Before he quietly went out to carry on his fight

They kept a scrapbook of his many feats
But his true worth is not captured on these sheets
He knew that he was a soldier in a losing war
And his return to those who love him was unsure

His futile fight to save a city block by block
Resulted one night in that tragic knock
His friends sadly called upon his loving wife
With a tearful message of how he lost his life

One last time his brothers gave him praise
But only half way up Old Glory did they raise
And in the end the bugler played his solemn tune
With prayers that his soul will enter soon

God bless you, Kiki!

Agent Camarena's life has made me a better person and gives me the greatest deal of hope for your futures. Agent Camarena's known for his personal philosophy "One person CAN make a difference."

I have tried my best to model my life aroung this hero. I can only hope and pray that I can be half as good an agent as he was.

It's not how this man died that made him a hero... It is how he lived.

He was dedicated to fight the war on drugs. He died doing what he loved- he died fighting for our country.

Rest in peace- we'll take your watch from here.

God bless you.

" Lord we thank you for this wonderful day to live, we understand that there are many people who are not able to enjoy everyday life. For this reason, we ask that you take Special Agent Camarena into your arms and save him a seat at the table of God for he gave the ultimate sacrafice to keep drugs off of the streets of America.
