This is a very tragic loss and my sincere sympathies to the family and co-workers of Officer Jonah Hernandez. It is a reminder that our law enforcement officers fight a battle every day, and some unfortunately pay the ultimate price.
Officer Hernandez was clearly a cop's cop, a man who took on adversaries without hesitation. Even the way he positioned a small flashlight on his lapel speaks volumes to his preparation and commitment to the job. Men like him are difficult to replace.
Officer Jonah Hernandez is an American hero, and he will not be forgotten.

"Somebody killed a policeman today,
And a part of America died.
A piece of our country he swore to protect
Will be buried with him at his side.
The suspect who shot him will stand up in court,
With counsel demanding his rights,
While a young widowed mother must work for her kids
And spend alone many long nights.
The beat that he walked was a battlefield, too,
Just as if he'd gone off to war.
Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half mast,
To his name they will add a gold star.
Yes, somebody killed a policeman today,
It happened in your town or mine.
While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors,
A cop put his life on the line.
Now, his ghost walks a beat on a dark city street,
And he stands at each new rookie's side.
He answered the call and gave us his all,
And a part of America died."
RIP too close to home ...........

Officer Hernandez, your passing left a hole in the citizens of Las Cruces, your law enforcement family, and your family. Your murder, like many others, was absolutely the work of evil; evil that you fought against, while you served and protected our community.
Your murderer was stopped by a good citizen who put his own life in danger to assist you in stopping this evil person. I pray for the good citizen, your family, and the men and women in uniform who worked along side you. Thank you for serving and paying the ultimate sacrifice. May your death not go in vain and always be remembered as a testament to the resolve of law enforcement.

Rest in Peace brother and watch over us. We will protect and serve from here on in your honor.
I fight not for glory or fame, for they are momentary. I fight for those who can't. I fight for Justice. I fight for the oppressed and the down trodden. And if I should lose my life for these just causes, then I have no regrets, For I serve to protect the innocent. It matters not where or when, for evil knows no boundaries. Be it fire, flood, or the threat of tyranny, I will not flee. Justice is my weapon. Faith is my shield. Hope is my armor. Cry not at my passing, for it was my Honor to fight for you. Shed not tears of sorrow, but tears of joy, for now, I stand with God.

O God of Peace, so many of America’s Peace Officers who are on the front lines to protect us never make it back home to their families. We pray for these fallen peace officers, Lord God, who gave their lives for us. We pray for the families of these heroes, who have to now endure life without their loved one. Lord God, society tries to move forward, but there is always bloodshed occurring. We approach Your throne of glory and grace to beg of You for peace. Lord God, bring peace to this land – the United States of America. We plead for Your divine intervention to quiet our hearts and unify our communities. Stop the violence that occurs amid our cities. We thank You for all America’s Peace Officers who have died protecting us, and ask that You send an everlasting peace so that America’s Peace Officers on the streets may be safe and return home to their loved ones at the end of their assigned shifts. In Christ Jesus, Your blessed Son, and by His authority, I pray. Amen.
Scripture Supporting the Law Enforcement Mission:
“So those who refuse to obey the laws of the land are refusing to obey God, and punishment will follow. For the policeman [peace officer] does not frighten people who are doing right; but those doing evil will always fear him. So if you don’t want to be afraid, keep the laws and you will get along well. The policeman [peace officer] is sent by God to help you. But if you are doing something wrong, of course you should be afraid, for he [the peace officer] will have you punished. He [the peace officer] is sent by God for that very purpose. Obey the laws, then, for two reasons: first, to keep from being punished, and second, just because you know you should.” [Romans 13:2-5 TLB]
Scriptures for Support, Hope, and Comfort:
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons [children] of God.” [Matthew 5:9 ESV]
[Jesus Said,] “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” [John 15:13 ESV]
And he [Jesus] said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise.” [Luke 23:43 ESV]
