Reflections for Officer Jeremiah J. Hurley, Jr.
"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I just watched Blown Away on Comcast OnDemand... You're service and heroism is duly noted. It's brave men and woman such as yourself that make this world a better place. Our world is a better place with you in it and a little poorer with your sacrifice. Thank you. God Bless you and all that serve.

I just saw the movie Blown Away..(on Comcast On Demand) at the end it said that it was dedicated to Jeremiah J. Hurley, Jr.
I am very sorry for this family's loss. My prayers will be with you, especially now in the event of this verdict being overturned and the resentencing of the bomber. It must have opened up a very deep wound for you. There is a site called
Virtual Memorials.com and I recommend it because it gave me a sense of closure by allowing me to build a memorial to my son who passed away whe he was 19 years old. I know how devestating it is to loose a son, brother or sister. I hope this site will help you deal with your grief.
Again, my prayers are with you.
May Jeremiah Rest In Peace.
Sincerly,

Jerry, I'll always remember you're calm presense at the bomb calls that you responded to while I worked the streets and appreciated your professional response along with your brothers on the bomb squad. Thanks for all your help in those stressful situations.

I write with deep regard for your loss. I am a recent graduate from the Boston Police Academy Class 45-06, and must say that everytime we ran pass your husband's memorial in Wollcott Sq. his precence was felt and I endured extreme pride. His dedication to the Boston Police Department will never be forgotten. I remember watching the aftermath on the news, I was 14 yrs. old, and can remember the pain you felt. I am sorry for your misfortune, and will keep you and your family in my prayers forever.
Always,

Officer Hurley, today marks the 15th anniversary of your tragic death. I can still see the image of the explosion that took your life that was shown on the news over and over again. It was a very sad day for all. My hat is off to all the bomb squad guys. You have to be some of the gutsiest people in the world. God has you by his side now, just in case.
May you forever Rest in Peace, Brother.
