Just saw Blown Away on Charter Communications (cable) and I finally noticed the tribute at the end, though I know I've seen the movie many times.

Bless you dearly, Officer Hurley, for the lives you saved and those you died trying to protect. The job you did was unlike any other in the world... the harshest battlefield imaginable: one where there are no borders, there are no battle lines, and the enemy is shrouded from sight and detection. And...it's a war zone that never ends; there are no treaties, no surrenders, no end to hostilities.

Such is the life of a police officer..and a bomb technician.

May your story never be forgotten.

Tomorrow I will run in The Run To Remember which honors the police officers killed in the line of duty. My friends dad worked with Officer Hurley and I was told his story. I am grateful to know Officer Hurley's brave story and I will be thinking of him tomorrow and I will wear his badge number proudly. Thank you, sir, for your service as a police officer.

Patrolman Hurley did a job that few people could do, facing death frequently a foot away. His courageousness protected all in the city of Boston to which all should be grateful. The sinister nature of the beast was such that it reared it's ugly head one day and killed the officer. One Officer fell that day, another followed later. For your ability to do that job regularly in a nonchalant, workmanlike, professional way, you have my deepest respect, sir. I believe that you both sit at the right hand of God.

We miss you Jerry. I know you and my gramps are
watching over us. Thank you, forever and always.

Saint Michael, heaven's glorious commissioner of police,
who once so neatly and successfully cleared God's premises
of all its undesirables, look with kindly and professional
eyes on your earthly force.

Give us cool heads, stout hearts, and uncanny flair for
investigation and wise judgement.

Make us the terror of burglars, the friend of children and
law-abiding citizens, kind to strangers, polite to bores,
strict with law-breakers and impervious to temptations.

You know, Saint Michael, from your own experiences
with the devil that the police officer's lot on earth is not
always a happy one; but your sense of duty that so
pleased God, your hard knocks that so surprised the

I can remember the day Mr. Hurley died. I was only 17 yrs. old. At that time I wanted to be a Cop. It was so sad to see the news and here of such tragedy then. For the Boston Police this was such a mind blower I can remember. The Bomb Squad of the Boston Police was such a unique squad.
The movie Blown Away depicts the Irish in Boston so well too. Boston Police is truly the best of the best when it comes to Police Depts. Officer Hurley your legend lives on forever. Godspeed brother!

I just finished watching "Blown Away" for the 4th time and noticed the dedication to Jeremiah J. Hurley, so I Googled his name and read the brief story about how he gave his life to save others. He made the ultimate sacrifice. Why don't we hear more about heroic people like him? Is there a memorial or statue somewhere in Boston for his service?

I just viewed the movie Blown Away saw your tribute. You were a very brave and dedicated man to saving others lives. Your family was very blessed to have had you and the world is blessed to have you and so many like you who sacrifice their safety for the lives of others. Every time that I hear of a bomb sighting, I think of the highest bravery of Officer Hurley and all the members of the Boston Bomb Squad. God bless all those officers and their familes for ensuring a safe place to live for us.

I too just watched the movie Blown Away and saw at the end that it said that it was dedicated to Jeremiah J. Hurley of the Boston Bomb Squad, so I did an internet search to find out more. I found this page.

After reading the comments already posted, I sat here at my desk for several minutes, trying to find the words to express my thoughts, but there were none. Others have already said most of what I wanted to say, and did so much more eloquently than I could have done.

I just wanted to add on thing though. Police officers are often disrespected for the job that they do. They really don't deserve it, but most of us are guilty of it from time to time. Some of us cuss under our breath when a cop pulls us over to write what we feel is an undeserved speeding ticket. Some of us call them rude names when they show up at our homes late at night responding to a disturbance that we say is none of their business. But 99% of the time, any negative reaction that we have to the actions or presence of a police officer is a direct result of something that WE instigated.

Don't want a speeding ticket? Don't speed!
Don't want an officer at your door at night? Don't create the disturbance in the first place!

The truth is that the guys with the badges put their lives on the line, for us, each and every day that they put on the uniform. The man who gave you a speeding ticket today could be the same man who shows up to save your life if something much worse happens later on, and many of them have died for us in the doing of it. So the next time you see a cop, say thank you. When he writes that ticket with your name on it, don't complain about how your tax dollars pay his salary. Instead be grateful, because someday he might pay something much more precious in return.
