Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Patrolman Andrew H. Cain

My faithful servant.
You were called upon to serve others.
You were asked to see, what no man should ever have to see.
To go through, what no man should ever have to go through.
But you did so with pride, honor, and integrity.

My faithful servant.
You were called upon to defend those, who could not defend themselves.
To provide justice to those, who did not respect it.
To lay down your life, if the time called for it.
Again, you did not question what was asked of you.
You did it with love, compassion, and loyalty.

My faithful servant.
In times of adversity, you prayed for strength.
In times of triumph, you praised your Lord.
You served your Country, State, and city proud.
Your service will forever be remembered by the many lives you’ve touched.

My faithful servant.
When your service on this earth is finally complete.
I will welcome you home with open arms.
I will embrace you and proclaim,
“Well done thou good and faithful servant.”

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 72nd anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. How nice that your family continued your legacy of protecting and serving.

Patrolman Cain was my grandfather. He was struck by a driver fleeing the police. He left 6 children aged 17 (my father) to age 5. There were no pensions or Workers Comp then, so my grandmother was left to support 6 young children in the Depression on her own. My father expressed to me once how sad he was that after his father's funeral there was no money to have the traditional luncheon for the mourners. After the burial the family just went home to a sad Christmas. Thank God times have changed and families of fallen heroes receive more support. I am proud of my grandfather and also my grandmother who held her family together despite the hard times. She was a brave and independent woman. She lived until I was a young adult and I have treasured memories of her stories, style and spirit. She never remarried.

I am very proud to say I know all about you even though I have never met you. You see my Dad his son, Andrew H. Cain II, who also like his Dad had been a Police Officer but in Northville when I was a little girl. My Dad was only a teenager when you passed away. But my Dad made sure we all knew about what a hero his Dad had been, and how proud he was of him. Anyone who knew my Dad, I am sure knew all about his Dad, and what a proud son he was. He made memorial books and pictures and plaques for my self and my sisters and brother, with pitures and clippings from the newspapers and letters his family had received back in December, 1939. We all knew how our Grandpa was the first Police Officer killed in the line of duty sadly the day before Christmas eve. As a family we attended all the police memorials in Dearborn, and how proud we were to see our last name "Cain" as the street named in honor of him directly in front of the Police Station, and my Dad was a constant presense in the Dearborn Police Station, everyone knew Andy Cain. After just coming from the cemetary of a Dearborn Heights Police Officer buried today, Jason Matkowski, who was killed in the line of duty, the sadness we felt there made me think of my Dad's reality his family also lived with. Police Officers are true heros in our community. I pray you all have a safe return home after each and every shift.
God bless you all!

Although much time has passed, your loss is still felt throughout the family. It is an honor to know your history, become a part of your family, and to serve the city for which you made the ultimate sacrifice. Thank you for your legacy of honor and service. God bless you and those who miss you.
