To the family, friends and fellow Cobb County Officers of Deputy Sheriff Marshall Samuel Ervin, Jr., Deputy Sheriff Jonathan Randall Koleski, and all active law enforcement officers around the world.

My heart breaks for you as we mourn the tragic loss of these two brave heroes. Please know that their service and ultimate sacrifice in the performance of their duty is so greatly honored, valued, and appreciated. I am especially grateful for the law enforcement officers, like these two brave officers, who continue to suit up and go out on patrol during these unprecedented times where our honorable profession is under attack like never before. Thank you for the incredibly important public service you perform.

The fact is that we live in a world where evil exists in many forms. That evil constantly seeks to penetrate, infect, and corrupt the hearts and minds of vulnerable members of our communities. We as a society cannot exist without the incredibly brave men and women of law enforcement who protect us and repel evil from infecting and destroying our communities. They make up what is referred to as the “thin blue line” that protects ordered society from degrading into violent chaos.

Our brave law enforcement officers act to protect us and repel evil in so many important ways, including spending time helping a misguided youth to get back on the right track, or perhaps their mere uniformed presence on patrol may act as a deterrence preventing someone else from committing a crime. Then, too, our law enforcement officers protect us and repel evil by removing dangerous people from our society in executing search/arrest warrants, or to use deadly physical force to terminate an active shooter, or by running into the World Trade Center to rescue people on 9/11/2001.

The simple truth is that our society would immediately collapse without our law enforcement officers there to protect us and repel evil from our communities.

I mourn the loss of these two fine officers and I am forever grateful for our active officers for your continued honorable public service!
