Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Ned P. Byrd

RIP to Officer Byrd and my condolences to the Byrd Family. As a fellow LEO it is painful that you left this earth far too soon. Officer Byrd you may not be here in flesh but your spirit remains forever. RIP.

Ned, you made a positive impact on a lot of people throughout your time as a detention officer, as a deputy sheriff, and away from work, as a civilian. For some reason, I never knew you were an Air Force veteran until after you were gone. Even though you are no longer here, please know that you will never be forgotten. Thank you for service & your sacrifice as a veteran & as a Deputy Sheriff. We have the watch now. God Speed Deputy Ned Byrd

Rest in Peace, Deputy Byrd.

Your community was surely a better place with you watching over it.

May your family, friends, and colleagues take solace knowing that you are on Heaven's beat now.

I know your fellow officers who are investigating this senseless crime will not rest until they bring the coward(s) to justice.

Godspeed

Fly high Brother! We have the watch from here. This always hits home when it is someone you have worked with, and around. I met Ned being in Inmate Transport for HCSO. He worked in the jail and in Transport for WCSO. The last time I talked with him, he said "Fordham, I am going to try out patrol." Even though I have lost touch with him through the past few years. I was able to ask mutual coworkers about him. This is a punch in the gut to all who knew him. He was one of us. He was Transportation. Y'all be safe, and keep your heads on a swivel! JF

I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save. I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.

Yours, very sincerely and respectfully,

Abraham Lincoln

Dep Byrd, it’s still hard to fathom what happened that night and hearing updates breaks my heart and put tears to my eyes. I feel honored to have been an influence to you when you started as a Detention Officer with WCSO 13 years ago. You always had a smile on your face and we knew were working the pods with you at PSC or the dorms at WCDC, it was going to be a good day and you gave it your all. Whomever did this heinous act took away a great coworker, a great deputy, and a great asset to WCSO and the citizens of Wake County. God Speed Ned.

I've thought about what happened what went wrong trying to figure out why, why you, why now. This has been the most surreal event of my career even going back to 2003 - 2004 and it hurts me to the core. I remember asking you, why did you give up your sergeant position in detention and I clearly remember you saying, "I've always wanted to be a Deputy". You succeeded your dreams and did everything you wanted in your life. You touched many people throughout your time as a law enforcement officer and as a civilian, I'm grateful for your service and I'm grateful for your sacrifice. You will never be forgotten, rest Sir and watch over us all as we continue to do our jobs regardless of the dangers we face daily.
Deputy Byrd thank you for your service within our agency...

In Honor of your Sacrifice and for your family and friends, I salute you as a HERO!

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whose blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

First and foremost, I would like to send my Condolences out to the immediate Byrd Family and as a member of my family with the WCSO, you will dearly be missed. In 2011, I met and begin working with Deputy Byrd as a Detention Officer, and whenever we cross paths, he would always greet you with a warm smile. It was a honored to work in his presence and share what hobbies that we enjoyed doing outside work. My heart was broken when I heard the news before arriving in line-up on August 12th at 6:45 hours. Deputy Byrd, I will always remember your positive energy and warm welcoming smile. You are our HERO, a Man of Honor and A Child of GOD! Prayers goes out to the Byrd Family. May God kept you strong during this difficult time. Rest in Peace Brother Byrd.
