It will be a very sad Christmas for the family of Mesquite, RX Police Sergeant Richard Houston who lost his life as result of being shot and killed in the line of duty. Not only does the family mourn the loss of his death, so des the entire City of Mesquite, TX and the Mesquite, TX Police Department.. When a police officer does around this time time of year, it puts the family in mourning and with Christmas coming , it also ruins the celebration of it for the family and the community that officer serves in.

To the Houston Family,
I am not going to attempt to write something to make yall feel a lil better or make some sense of why this happened to yalls Cowboy and to yall to. I won't cause there aint a such thing. Not any words, sayings, poems, flowers, balloons, or a Bible verse powerful enough to take away the pain and confusion that yall are feeling today tomorrow and next. If there was anyway possible I would've insist on taking the Sarge's shift that call and them bullets. If I ever find that Jeanie lamp to make any one wish on, I would forfeit all the money, property, and all the prestige in the world to make this all stop now. If the Sarge doesn't mind Andy Griffithand Mash reruns then I welcome him to sit with my Mama up there. It may be a lil crowded up there. Comfortably crowded. She is surrounded by police officers and soldiers. It's a motley cruel but it is beautiful and perfect. Cause they all sit on Jesus's porch every evening drinking sweet tea HIM. It's Jesus Happy Hour. I'm right in the middle of a promise to keep but I will do my damnest to ease yalls way early to middle this week coming. I'm close by. Neighbors really, Dallas. When I get off here I'm gonna reach up to Sarge and sing him a song. Oh ya, we lost a Sarge in 16. Sgt Micheal J Smith 6141DPD. He is well covered by great men. HERO'S! Zamarripa 10112DPD Thompson 420Dart Aherns 8193DPD and Krol 9217DPD and Jesus. All I can really say besides an invitation with my Mama is "I CARE!"

St. Michael, heaven's glorious Commissioner of Police,
who once so neatly and successfully cleared God's premises
of all its undesirables, look with kindly and professional
eyes on your earthly force.
Give us cool heads, stout hearts, hard punches, and uncanny flair for
investigation and wise judgment.
Make us the terror of burglars, the friends of children and
law-abiding citizens, kind to strangers, polite to bores,
strict with law-breakers and impervious to temptations.
In troubles and riots give us sheer muscle without temper; at the police count, give us love for truth and evidence without any thought of self.
You know, St. Michael, from your own experiences
with the devil that the policeman's lot on earth is not
always a happy one; but your sense of duty that so
pleased God, your hard knocks that so surprised the
devil, and your angelic self- control give us inspiration. Make us as loyal to the law of God as we are particular about the law of the land.
And when we lay down our night sticks, enroll us in your
heavenly force, where we will be as proud to guard the
throne of God as we have been to guard the city of all the people.

I woke up at 05:30 thinking this was just a dream. I placed my feet on the floor and got a cup of coffee. I pick up my phone and I saw a multitude of notifications. I walked outside to cool damp weather and looked at the flag in my front yard. That’s when it hit me.
You know that this happens to Chicago, New York, and as bad as is, this doesn’t happen in Mesquite Texas. And then it does. I sat down my coffee and immediately lowered my flag to half staff. I stepped back and saluted. I saluted not that he was gone, not that there was a void; I saluted as I would salute a changing of the guard. For I know that he will stand in the ranks of the Arch Angel St. Micheal, and be counted. Because ever cop knows, when he has close a call, Richard will do what he knows best, lead.
So for those Officers who say “What a close call, or “That was too close for comfort,” know this, God will send his best troops to protect us, Badge 821 Officer Houston, doing what he knows best.

The silence, now, is deafening
where once his laughter fell.
The beat is empty of the one
who knew its streets so well.
The squad room has a vacancy
no one else can occupy.
And so we stand, salute and grieve
again we say 'good-bye'.
