My condolences to his family, friends and co-workers.
I wrote the following:

We knew, when we strapped
On our belts, we might not
Come home after our shift;
Each day could have been our last.
We are the role-models
And must pass on the eternal torch
Of self-sacrifice to the next generation.
We have quieted the child with tears;
We've sat with those those whose spirits
Needed a lift; we've cried with those who've
Suffered loss so they did not
Have to alone bear their heavy cross.
Love is an amazing gift.

We've been called by every name
Known to man;
Talked down those who've sought to maim
Whenever and whomever they can.
We've witnessed atrocities,
Vengeful hearts,
Casting lots, and devising evil plots.

Yes, we lay down our lives everyday
To protect and serve.
We are the hero's ordained by God
Here on earth.
Say a little prayer for us,
And tell us you love us before
We walk out that door.

"Somebody killed a policeman today,
And a part of America died.
A piece of our country he swore to protect
Will be buried with him at his side.
The suspect who shot him will stand up in court,
With counsel demanding his rights,
While a young widowed mother must work for her kids
And spend alone many long nights.
The beat that he walked was a battlefield, too,
Just as if he'd gone off to war.
Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half mast,
To his name they will add a gold star.
Yes, somebody killed a policeman today,
It happened in your town or mine.
While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors,
A cop put his life on the line.
Now, his ghost walks a beat on a dark city street,
And he stands at each new rookie's side.
He answered the call and gave us his all,
And a part of America died."

Lord Jesus Christ, You came to earth to show us what true love looks like. You taught us that love was about sacrifice, virtue, and service. You taught us that love means to lay down your life for one another. For fallen law enforcement officers everywhere, we thank You, O Lord, for their selfless example of courage and valor. We ask that You would bless and keep the families, friends, and colleagues of these fallen law enforcement officers. Wipe every tear from their eyes, O Lord. Help them to heal and to move forward in a way that honors the memories of their loved ones in Blue. In Christ Jesus, I pray for all those law enforcement officers who have fallen in the Line-of-Duty. Amen.
