In Honor of your Sacrifice and for your family and friends, I salute you as a HERO!

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whose blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

When a Law Enforcement Officer is killed in the line of duty, it is not only he or she who dies. It is not only that officer's family who feels this sudden loss, this huge hole in what was a tight-knit family, although they feel the tragedy of the immediate loss and must somehow cope with it. It affects all of us.

Each one of us dies a little when a Law Enforcement Officer is killed in the line of duty. We all feel a sense of loss when it happens. I live in Florida, yet even here, far away from Boulder, I felt the loss of those customers and of Officer Talley as he tried his best to defend those people whom he probably did not know personally, yet he gave the ultimate sacrifice to defend everyone in that grocery store.

Officer Talley, you gave your all to defend those people. Now let us watch over you as you enter that peace of eternal rest. May we never forget.

“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”

“We in this world today...shall be remembered...we few...we happy few...we Band Of Brothers...For he today...whom sheds his blood with me...shall be...My Brother...lest you say it proudly...we are but warriors for the working day.” Shakespeare

May the Lord bless you and keep
You, My Brother...your duty on earth is done...Go rest high on that mountain in all of Gods glory...and my prayer is that your loved ones can find peace and healing in that same grace and glory.

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God.” Matt. 5:9

In situations such as this, the good guys need to outnumber the perps and you should have had some armed backup. Even if it was just a citizen with a carry permit. This will not stop until we as citizens, rise up and help protect our own. When the odds turn against them being able to shoot at random, and when decent citizens who possess a carry permit start ending their rampage as soon as it starts, then the desire to walk in and open fire will not seem so cut and dry. When they realize there will be someone prepared to stop them, that’s when we will see this kind of tragedy end. Officer, please Rest In Peace. You’ve done your job with heart.
