Officer Yarbrough,

To think of the events that unfolded in our life’s that made us beat-mates is hard to fathom. To think of the odds of us becoming friends is even harder to fathom. Every shift we worked had an underlying challenge, who was going to work the hardest and do the most. After realizing what it was going to take to out do you, I become proud of who you were and proud to find someone that was always willing to go the extra mile. Every shift also seemed like a challenge of who was going to be the best. You might not have realized it at the time, but were the best. Your drive, work ethic, and who you were as a person motivated me to do better and do more. Rest easy sister. Know that your life has impacted my life. Know that I’ll strive to do better and do more. Know that you’ll cause me to push everyone else around me to be better, because your presence alone would be enough to do that. Thank you for being such a bright light in a dark place.

Officer Yarbrough,

The chain of events in life that lead to us being beat-mates is hard to fathom. The odds of us being friends is even harder to fathom. I’m thankful for everything that lead to us meeting, and blessed to be your friend. Every shift we worked had an underlining challenge, who was going to do the most, and who was going to be the best. You might not have realized it, but you were the best. The one that pushed me to do better and do more. Your energy and work ethic was unmatched, and made me happy to find someone that was willing to challenge and out do me. Your shadow will go unmatched and the void will never be filled. Please rest easy Sister. Know that you’ll always motivate me to do better, and to do more.

I almost applied in 2013 but decided against it. In 2018, I applied to Beaumont PD. I started the academy in August of 2018. I used to beat myself up about not doing it sooner.

Sheena, last night I was speaking with a friend about you and she made a comment about timing. If I would’ve applied in 2013, I wouldn’t have gotten to know you the way I was able to. You were intelligent, kind, and bubbly. You had a work ethic like no other. You were goofy and always commented on my crazy hair. I’m going to miss teasing you about your “baby boots.” There’s no one I’d rather put pants on a naked man with or change a tire with. I’m sorry I made you eat Elena’s and Carmela’s with me all the time. I’m sorry I never tried yoga with you. I’m sorry I didn’t take half the credit for the 1st day of FTO shift meeting incident. I’m sorry we didn’t take more pictures together. I’m sorry we never got the chance to ride 2 man. I’m sorry you were taken so soon. But what I’m not sorry about is waiting those 5 years so that I had the chance to know you for these last 2

In Honor of your Sacrifice and for your family and friends, I salute you as a HERO!

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whose blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

There are no words that will be typed here that will ease the pain of her loss. Her brothers and sisters in blue mourn her loss. Her loved ones will suffer the pain of her loss.
It will dull with time but hopefully, God-willing, the spark of her life never does.
God Speed young lady. See you on the other side.
