Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Officer Jimmie Lamar Haynes

In memory of the ultimate sacrifice my fellow CHAPD Officer Jimmie Lamar Haynes made.
I salute him as I reflect on his bravery, passion and devotion to serve and protect a neglected and underserved community.
I have love for this brother because of what he stood for and what he will always represent.
God bless his legacy.

Today, I was going through some old pictures on my phone and there you were. I told my sons about you and how a police station is named after you. I decided to show them this page and I didn't know doing so would hit me so hard. You were tough, you were firm, even though I thought that you were mean you still smiled, laughed and enjoyed life. You dedicated your life to this country and a coward take you away from us way too soon. You were not afraid. I love you and miss you Uncle Jim.

Hey Jimmie-
Remember when we were on Army recruiting duty in Chicago and we had the hardest time filling in the box? We were scrambling! Well all these years later I am an old retired Master Sergeant and today I was thinking about you. I know that you are in Heaven being the nice person that you always were, but I miss when we were the 'newbies' and had to scramble! You rest easy, my Friend, I think about you every now and then and end up on this page. I hope that your family is holding up well in your absence. You were a good friend.

August is probably the coldest, longest and hardest month in the year for me; every year I miss you more, I' angrier that you're gone and I don't know how to make these feelings stop. I am however, so blessed and happy that I knew you and you were one of the Best Friends I've ever known. definitely Gone Too Soon and I MIss You Jimmie!

Being in the 1st class of CHAPD graduates all 89 of us were closer them close... It has been over 30 years since we all were together at one place and at one time as a family. I've worked in Law Enforcement for over 35 years in some of the worst areas in this nation, from the Penitentiary (Statesville Dept. of Corrections) to the Projects (CHAPD) to Englewood and the Westside of Chicago (CPD). But there was no closer bond then we had as that 1st class of CHAPD graduates, you will never be forgotten my brother!

Although we never met, I started at CHAPD 3 years after you were taken from us, I always heard good things about you. A Police Officers career is typically 29 years and a day, you've been gone that long now. Most of us that either worked with you or knew of you are now retired or retiring. It's good to see that you have not been forgotten by your friends, and coworkers. Your family never forgot. Rest in Peace.

I came on the tails of Jimmy in 1992 to the CHA. When they decided to get their act together and acknowledge those who gave some, CHA FINALLY acknowledged Jimmy in the appropriate manner and honor those who gave all.

Rest in peace my brother and watch over us who continue the fight to make this world a better place.

Just days before the anniversary of 26 years, I still can't believe you are gone - charge it to my head because my heart surely remembers and skips 26 beats weaker since you've been gone.

"It's a great day to be a Soldier" With a wide smile and stand up proud poised stride you would "Carry On" Well I'm Still Missing you, still haven't found away to stop; we only have few "GREAT FRIENDS" and you sir were mine....Yes, I'm Missing you!
