Thank you for your service. Tomorrow I will go to work at Southdale Elementary and try my best to honor your life and sacrifice amongst a precious group of kindergarten students. We will have a moment of silence to honor you. We will create an alter with your picture, fresh flowers, and student-created offerings. We all have benefited greatly from your service. Your bravery and generosity are both so moving. May you rest in peace and know that Daytonians are so grateful for the many ways, both seen and unseen, you so humbly served our Greater Dayton community. God bless you.

I have never forgotten a poem that I heard years ago at the funeral of another young officer.
He had been killed while driving his radio car to assist another officer in following a stolen car. I am unsure what the title is or who the author is and so I am unable to give credit to the author but it is still sad, important, and meaningful:

The silence, now, is deafening
where once his laughter fell.

The beat is empty of the one
who knew its streets so well.

The squad room has a vacancy
no one else can occupy.

And so we stand, salute and grieve
again we say 'good-bye'.
