THE FINAL INSPECTION:

The Policeman stood and faced his God.
Which must always come to pass
He hoped his shoes were shining bright
Just as brightly as his brass
“Step forward now, Policeman,
How shall I deal with you?
Hove you always turned the other cheek?
To my word have you been true?”
The Policeman squared his shoulders and said
“No, Lord, I guess I ain’t
Because those of us who carry guns
Can’t always be a saint.
I’ve had to work most Sundays
And at times my talk was rough.
Because the world is awfully tough.
But I never took a thing
That wasn’t mine to keep…
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills just got to steep.
And I never passed a call for help.
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me.
I’ve wept unmanly tears.
I know I don’t deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fears.
If you’ve a place for me here, Lord,
It needn’t be so grand.
I never expected or had too much.
But if you don’t, I’ll understand.”
There was a silence all around the throne
Where the saints often trod
As the Policeman waited quietly,
For the judgement of his God.
“Step forward now Policeman,
You’ve born your burdens well,
Come walk a beet on heaven’s streets.
You’ve done your time in Hell.”

The true measure of a person
is not found in the
might of their arm,
their wealth
or their power –
it is found in the strength
of their character.

There is no greater testimony to
ones character, than ones
willingness to sacrifice all,
in the noble quest of
providing protection to all
whom they serve.

On behalf of my family, I extend our sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you suffered when Robert was killed in the line of duty.

To the Totten family, fellow border patrol agents, and all who call Robert beloved, my heart goes out to all of you and may you find comfort in your loved ones and your strength in your faith. When my son was killed, the entire law enforcement community in our area embraced us in a circle of love and support. I know that that you will receive that same kind of support. It makes the unbearable less torturous, and I pray for your solace.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the dedicated service Agent Totten gave to his community and the citizens of our country and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on October 6, 2019.

Agent Hotten, thank you for your service. To think, had there been something to block those individuals from entering the country illegally, you would not have had to be in that dangerous location in the first place. But, who am I to say?

You gave your life in the service of this nation. We mourn your passing but celebrate your life and efforts on behalf of us all.

God Bless you, Brother and may your eternal rest be ever peaceful.
