Family, Friends & Fellow Officers Remember...

On behalf of my family, I extend our sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you suffered when Brian was killed in an accidental action line of duty death.

To the Mulkeen family, fellow officers, and all who call Brian beloved, my heart goes out to all of you and may you find comfort in your loved ones and your strength in your faith. When my son was killed, the entire law enforcement community in our area embraced us in a circle of love and support. I know that that you will receive that same kind of support. It makes the unbearable less torturous, and I pray for your solace.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the dedicated service Detective Mulkeen gave to his community and the citizens of New York and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on September 29, 2019.

Officer Jared Mooney and I, having been part of a very sad, solemn and moving funeral service yesterday, the following poem came to mind. Often a person is not appreciated until after death and then, it is too late. Embrace your child, parent, sibling, cousin, spouse, friend and forgive those who have wronged you. Remember the "dash" in your life is the most important thing:
The Dash
I read of a man who stood to speak
at the funeral of a friend.
He referred to the dates on her tombstone
from the beginning ... to the end.

He noted that first came the date of her birth
and spoke of the following date with tears,
but he said what mattered most of all
was the "dash" between those years.

For that dash represents all the time
that she spent alive on earth ...
and now only those who loved her
know what that little line is worth.

For it matters not, how much we own;
the cars ... the house ... the cash.
What matters is how we live and love
and how we spend our "dash".

So think about this long and hard ...
Are there things you'd like to change?
For you never know how much time is left
that can still be rearranged.

If we could just slow down enough
to consider what’s true and real,
and always try to understand
the way other people feel.

And be less quick to anger,
and show appreciation more
and love the people in our lives
like we've never loved before.

If we treat each other with respect,
and more often wear a smile ...
remembering that this special "dash"
might only last a little while.

So, when your eulogy is being read
with your life’s actions to rehash ...
would you be proud of the things they
say about how you spend your "dash"?

I’m sadden by the lost of another brother in blue. I’m reminded everyday how important we are every time my brothers and sisters suite up to protect and serve the many people who need us. I often reflect on the challenges of knowing that on any given day anyone could need our sworn services . The only question I have not been able to answer is, who comes to our rescue when we are in need of help? Thanks for being a warrior and giving your all, you will be missed by many I’m sure.
