RIP California Highway Patrol
CHP 8463
August 30, 2024
Tracy, his family and loved ones, as well as the members of our Florida Highway Patrol remain in our thoughts and prayers. The loss of Sgt. Vickers is a not just a tragic loss, but a reminder of how precious life is, and the the positive impact an individual can have on others. Sgt. Vickers made a positive difference by not just what he did in service, but how he did it.

On behalf of my family, I extend our sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you suffered when Tracy was killed in the line of duty.
To the Vickers family, fellow troopers. and all who call Tracy beloved, my heart goes out to all of you and may you find comfort in your loved ones and your strength in your faith. When my son was killed, the entire law enforcement community in our area embraced us in a circle of love and support. I know that that you will receive that same kind of support. It makes the unbearable less torturous, and I pray for your solace.
This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the dedicated service Sgt. Vickers gave to his community and the citizens of Florida and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on September 27, 2019.

The true measure of a person
is not found in the
might of their arm,
their wealth
or their power –
it is found in the strength
of their character.
There is no greater testimony to
ones character, than ones
willingness to sacrifice all,
in the noble quest of
providing protection to all
whom they serve.

"The Final Inspection"
The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"
The policeman squared his shoulders and said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.
But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here,
Lord, It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't.....I'll understand.
There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."

Tracy, I’ll always cherish the time we spent training for QRF and and the successful deployments we’ve shared Brother. You always had a great attitude and a infectious smile that made the miserable conditions the best times I’ve had on the Patrol! I’m so proud of the Trooper you had become in a short time. Thank you for the life you lived in service to Country and our State. Fair winds and following seas my Navy Brother. I’ll never forget you and will honor and cherish the memories of you Sir. Please watch over all of us. Rest in eternal peace Tracy.

I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save. I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.
Yours, very sincerely and respectfully,
Abraham Lincoln
