Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Wayne Martin Bryant, Jr.

Marty,
This is hard to do since I tarnished the badge, but I appreciate the hard work and dedication you showed me for the one week you were my FTO. Then Phil white took over and picked up where you left off. My heart broke when you were killed and to this day I still think about you. Thank you for your service, dedication and hardwork. What happened to me is not a reflection of or on you. God speed my friend.

I have known Marty since we were small children. I knew his whole family. We all attended the same church, lived in the same neighborhood and our parents frequently got together for card playing. Loved them all.
Marty was one of the finest guys I ever knew. He never was ever disrespectful to me or anyone I knew. He was funny and made me laugh all the time. A class act to be sure and I wish there were more people like him. If there were, the world would be a much better place. Rest easy in heaven my friend, and I look forward to seeing you again!

Not a month goes by that I don't think of my High School friend, Marty. Our friendship was cut short from his tragic encounter. As the 2020 news stories unfold about defunding police my thoughts go back to this event. I remember Marty's passion to Serve and Protect and He gave his all to follow through on his commitment. I often think whey we do not hear these stories broadcast on the nightly news. I know the majority of Police Officers are just like Marty. Thank you Marty for your willingness to give in all that you did. Your life impacted my life, for that I will be grateful and when I see you in the next life I will give you a big bear hug and tell you face to face "Thank You!"

Marty, it has been many years. I miss talking to you, and the times we studied and recieve our degrees. I find myself thinking of things that you would find funny. You were one on my biggest supporters. I even named one of my sons after you and I remind him at times of his responsibility and the person he is named after.

Marty:

I never got a chance to meet you, but I was a K-9 handler at PCSO when you reached the end of your watch. I will never forget switching on the television and seeing the familiar light blue stripe on the side of you uniform trousers visible as you lay where you had fallen next to your patrol car, covered with a sheet. Yours was my first sense of the loss of a brother in law enforcement. We had never met, yet the loss felt so close and personal. We recently lost two brothers here in Chandler within just days of each other. Each new loss reminds me of you and your sacrifice, all that have followed since, and all that will inevitably come in the years ahead. I regret not having the pleasure of meeting you, by all accounts you are exactly the kind of person I would cherish as a friend. I know we will get that chance someday. My thoughts and prayers to all of your friends and family.

My brother will forever be remembered by anyone who met him as one of God's lights in this world. He loved everyone he came in contact with just as we are commanded to do. We discussed at length how he believed that police work was his calling. He went to work each day knowing that he was in danger, but also knowing that innocent people deserved protection from the darkness around them. He was such an example to our family and our community. I miss him more and more as life goes on and I look forward to being reunited with him. I have the utmost respect for any person wearing a badge, on patrol or working a beat, I often pray for your safety as you work so hard to ensure ours. Thank you all for many days of sacrifice and service.

Today I received an old picture of the Sherwood Police Dept staff. It brought back fond memories of all the hours that we worked side by side as young officers.
I still think of you often,

Marty and I had several criminal justice class together at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. I liked Marty from the first moment I met him. He was a quite unassuming person who dreamed of being a police officer. I was shocked to learn of his death at such a young age. RIP old friend.
