Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Ryan Shane Thompson

They killed someone like me today. He was Kittitas County Deputy, only a few counties away from me. He wore a badge. He carried a heavy belt around his waist. He had a family who cared if he came home. He felt pain and joy. He was needed, loved, and relied on. A man killed him because he didn't like what he stood for.

Today, he died for no other reason than he was like me.

Go easy brother...

Thank you for your ultimate sacrifice Ryan. It was not in vain. You are forever a hero. All of the best to your family and friends. Rest In Peace brother.

Officer Court Harris
Mesa Police Department

The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges
can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here,
Lord, It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't.....I'll understand.

There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.

"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."

"Somebody killed a policeman today,
And a part of America died.
A piece of our country he swore to protect
Will be buried with him at his side.
The suspect who shot him will stand up in court,
With counsel demanding his rights,
While a young widowed mother must work for her kids
And spend alone many long nights.
The beat that he walked was a battlefield, too,
Just as if he'd gone off to war.
Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half mast,
To his name they will add a gold star.
Yes, somebody killed a policeman today,
It happened in your town or mine.
While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors,
A cop put his life on the line.
Now, his ghost walks a beat on a dark city street,
And he stands at each new rookie's side.
He answered the call and gave us his all,
And a part of America died."

Lord God, our hearts and prayers go out to the Kittitas County, Washington Sheriff’s Office and for the family, friends, and colleagues of Deputy Sheriff Ryan Thompson, of the Kittitas County Sheriff’s Office, who was shot and killed in the Line-of-Duty on Tuesday, March 19, 2019. Depart, dear brother-in-blue, out of this world into the arms of the Father who created you, into the arms of the Son who redeemed you, and into the arms of the Spirit who made you whole. You have fought the good fight, you have finished the race, and you have kept the faith [2Timothy 4:7]. Now rest easy in peace. We will take it from here. Amen.

Scripture teaches us that:
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” [Matthew 5:4]
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.” [Matthew 5:9]
“Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” [John 15:13]
