Reflections for Master Police Officer Joseph William Shinners
My thoughts are with you and all of your loved ones. I know every day without you is hard on all of them. Continue to keep watch over them and protect them. Send them signs so they know you are near.

On behalf of my family, I extend our sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you suffered when Joseph was killed in the line of duty.
To the Shinners family, fellow officers, and all who call Joseph, my heart goes out to all of you and may you find comfort in your loved ones and your strength in your faith. When my son was killed, the entire law enforcement community in our area embraced us in a circle of love and support. I know that that you will receive that same kind of support. It makes the unbearable less torturous, and I pray for your solace.
This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the dedicated service Officer Shinners gave to his community and the citizens of Utah and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on January 5, 2019.

Joe I will never forget the first day I met you, you were 6 yrs old. You were very shy but it only took a few days and you and I became best friends! Of course feeding you yummy dinners and cookies for desert always helped, lol!! We had lots of fun camping, on the CarolynKay boating, and watching you wheel Barkley(dog) around in the cul-de-sac in the stroller all dressed up in a bonnet strapped in I will forever have that memory etched in my mind!! When your Dad & I got married and you were in the wedding I will never forget when you said to me “your not my mom, but I love you like one tho” I forever will have you in my heart you were a son to be proud of!! I am proud you are my Best Friend Forever!! Till we meet again......

As 2019 comes to a close, I cannot help but think of how it began. Waking up to see your mother’s messages on my phone. “Katie, Joe’s been shot!” followed by “he’s gone!”
Even after almost year it doesn’t quite seem real.
This year, your name and image have been all over our department, but you, sadly, are no longer with us. We’ve watched Kaylyn’s amazing strength, we’ve met the second son you never knew you’d have, we’ve watched your mother’s heart break all over again as she buried her second child, and we now find ourselves in the middle of planning for National Police Week in Washington DC in an attempt to honor you and help heal.
It is as if there was what The Provo Police Department was like before January 5th and what it has been like ever since.
I worked with Joe. I rode along with him. He really was an amazing officer, a dedicated husband, a wonderful son, a fantastic brother, and an excellent father. Everyone who knew him, misses him more than words can say.
He was a hero in every sense of the word and as the saying goes, heroes never die.
3310 2J will always miss and love you Joe.
Take care.

Joey, thank you for a good hunt this year. Sorry we were so loud and smelly previous years. Your wit and presence were missed. You were such an honorable father, son, husband and friend. You can not be replaced. We all miss you so. We count the days until we will see you again. To the Jeeps we all have swamped.

Police Officiers in America have a very hard Job.
I live in Israel ouer Police is very strong here but are not in danger like US Police Officiers.
In the States everybody have a Gun that makes the Job for Police Officiers very dangerous.
Police Officier Joseph William is a victim of the Gun Law in America.
I hope that one day only Police Officiers in the States will be allowed to wear and use Guns.
Hope you will have it good in heaven.
God will take care of your Son and Wife.
God Bless America and take care of all Police Officiers in America.

To Mrs. Shinners and son,
I am sorry for the loss of your husband/father. I wanted to share a sentiment that was on a card I got when my brother was killed in the line of duty, I hope it helps in some small way. "When you are sitting there going about your day and the memory of a loved one who has passed away comes slipping into your mind, that is their way of letting you know you are still connected." You both, and all Officer Shinners' entire family and co-workers, are in my thoughts and prayers
