Reflections for Police Officer Antwan DeArvis Toney

So painful to see the long list of fallen officers annually. I never had the pleasure of meeting Officer Toney but throughout all of this, I have heard nothing but positive things about his character. It saddens me to think of him responding to a seemingly routine call and not knowing it would be his last moments in this life. It is a reminder that any given day could be our last as a law enforcement officials.
My sentiments to Officer Toney's family, friends, and colleagues at the Gwinnett County Police Dept. His Spirit shall forever shine.

Every so often in life, you indirectly cross paths with a person you don't know, and that person marks you forever. Although these were tragic circumstances, It was a great privilege to honor Office Toney and his family with the 12Stone parking team at his service. By the end of the service I felt I knew this young man personally, and was saddened that I never had that opportunity during his life here on earth.
Since your service Officer Toney, each day I hear your final call from the radio in my head and it reminds me to thank our First Responders every time I see them in life and never again wish I had during a funeral service. May the Almighty Father in Heaven, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit bless, comfort and keep your family. I will meet you one fine day Officer Toney. Rest in Peace.

Brother is has been a week and my heart is still heavy. I’ve learned so much about you in the last week and I am grateful knowing that you wore the same uniform that I wear. You touched a lot of people in a positive way. Rest in heaven brother. Gone but never forgotten. You will truly be missed. Gwinnett will never be the same without you.

From what I've read and watched Antwan is up there laughing at us wondering what all the fuss is about. What a remarkable young man. Antwan, your sister did you proud, had me weeping for the loss but as I sat here crying I realized that's not necessarily bad because in death you're touching people that would never have known you.

I believe that even in death he will continue to impact and change lives ... every time you guys do something he would have suggested, each time you extend a kindness because you remember that's what he would have done when you use something ... anything from humor to mediation to empathy to touch lives and you do it with Antwan in mind, he is living and making a difference. My heart breaks for you all.

Every morning I go to my knees. During that time I pray Psalm 91 over all LEO’s and this prayer also:

“Lord, Be with all law enforcement officers. Keep them safe and free from harm. They are Your soldiers on the front line of the battle against evil. If one should fall this day - wrap their family in your loving arms. Surround them with Your angels, loving family, friends, neighbors and caring people to comfort them. Ease their pain. Help them to mourn well. In Jesus' name and for Your Glory, Amen.”

I know that God sends those angels to watch over our officers, sometimes to protect them and sometimes to whisk our officers into His presence.

Feel His presence as God answers the prayers of many who have fallen to their knees on your behalf. Since the day of my son's death, I have carried every law enforcement officer and their family in my heart.

I have lifted your family to God every morning for over seven years. I pray that Antwan's life and death will bring glory to God.

Trust those prayers. God is with you; He knows and will ease your pain.

Our faith helps us to see beyond the grave.

In Honor of your Sacrifice and for your family and friends, I salute you as a HERO!

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whose blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

The true measure of a person
is not found in the
might of their arm,
their wealth
or their power –
it is found in the strength
of their character.

There is no greater testimony to
ones character, than ones
willingness to sacrifice all,
in the noble quest of
providing protection to all
whom they serve.

I’m active duty in the Navy and when I returned from a deployment this was the first thing I heard on the news and it is a terrible thing knowing the turmoil that this nation is succumbing to. My wife is on police academy and I’ve always avidly supported everything our officers do. When I retire from my naval service it is what I want to do as well. RIP brother, another sheepdog lost defending the sheep.
