On behalf of my family, I extend our sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you suffered when Aaron died in the line of duty.

To the Roberts family, fellow deputies, and all who call Aaron beloved, my heart goes out to all of you and may you find comfort in your loved ones and your strength in your faith. When my son was killed, the entire law enforcement community in our area embraced us in a circle of love and support, and I know you will receive the same support. It makes the unbearable less torturous, and I pray for your solace. I hope that your family knows that a nation mourned for you.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the dedicated service Deputy Roberts gave to his community and the citizens of Missouri and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on September 7, 2018.

I didn't have the privilege of knowing Deputy Roberts, however this will be the second brother in blue I'll have had to bury from Greene County. I pray for peace for Aaron's wife and child, and I hope the Greene County Sheriff's Office continues to show interest in their lives as time goes on.

When Deputy Gary McCormack died, I felt a deep personal responsibility to be involved in the receiving of the hearse and every vehicle during the arrival at the cemetery. I stood there in the heat in my suit (I was a Bailiff for Christian County at the time), and performed traffic control for everyone coming into the cemetery. I saluted every Greene County vehicle. I felt the call to do so, because Gary had been hit and killed by a member of the Fire Department I was also a member of.

I'm medically retired now, but I still very much bleed blue, and when any of our brothers or sisters fall, we all feel it. God's speed, Aaron. When I heard your car was swept away in the flood waters, I prayed they'd find you safe inside, or clinging to a tree, or possibly able to swim to a muddy shore and crawl out of the flood waters, and just not be able to transmit due to a wet radio. From the stories I've heard the past few days from guys in Willard and from the GCSO, I think we really would have gotten to be good friends if we worked together. The loss is mine.
