Reflections for Police Officer Reginald Jake Gutierrez

To the family of Officer Gutierrez and Tacoma PD: My sincere condolences for the loss of Officer Jake. I am a private citizen who is totally humbled by the risks taken and too often sacrifices made by the men and women in blue on our behalf. I'm sure he was a fine officer doing a really tough job. I'm sure that I speak for the good people of Washington and our nation when I say how much we appreciate the work you do. RIP to your brother and be safe!

Dear Jake:

My words, and that of everyone else, cannot undo this despicable and cowardly act by human garbage, using children to shield himself. Gratefully, he has been sent to hell. “The candle of the wicked shall be put out forever”. But enough of vermin.

Thank you for your commitment to do the right thing and protect those who cannot protect themselves, at such a high cost as well. Thank you for your actions that prove all the convoluted media hype and anti-police protestors wrong…again. I’m still waiting for the demonstrating to begin in protest of your death and the murder of every other officer this year. I hope the people remember. I hope all of Tacoma and Washington and the United States remembers. It’s true, freedom isn’t free, even here in the Homeland.

I hurt for your family as well, particularly at this time of year, knowing you won’t be here to enjoy Christmas and the joy and the warmth of your home. But because of your sacrifice, many others will enjoy Christmas and joy and warmth. But your family has been robbed of that…forever. I hope that as of January 20, 2017, maybe a new, pro law enforcement line of thinking will emerge, where this kind of terror won’t be tolerated or explained away over “having a beer”.

I pray Almighty God will stop this carnage and hold you close to His heart, and blanket your family with His peace. May He help heal them and know they have a hero in their family. Before he passed away, my late dad gave me this words, and I cherish them even today, many years later. I give them to you: “Above all else, honor”. Rest in peace, Jake. We have the watch.

The heart grows weaker when an officer of the law is taken from his family. The suddenness of the community and country spill across the red, white and blue. An anger grows as 21 officers have fallen with you and by your side. I hold steadfast though because you bravely spent 17 years on the street and in law enforcement. There is a special star that glows brightly since you passed. But our anger must not retreat until we can truly bring those who have wronged the Blue Line truly are brought down, never to walk the street, the earth again.
