Avenue of the Fallen

Standing at attention in their class “A“uniforms, badges gleaming and shoes like glass, are your brothers and sisters of Law Enforcement. All of whom have previously paid the ultimate price.
Today, like many others, they welcome you to this wonderful place.
As you march down the Avenue of the Fallen, all eyes focus on you as if to say “it’s OK, you’re with your eternal partners.”
A salute is followed and a tear can be seen on so many faces.
Welcome, you served well.
Now come join us in the ranks, another is coming home.

Dear Paul:

During my 35 year tenure in law enforcement, I have never been able to understand the carnage against us by vermin criminals, but more disturbing, the apathy and almost expectation and acceptance of our fellow brothers in blue getting killed, exhibited by the public. And as in your case, I am yet again heartbroken and saddened that in a few days, this heinous act will be surpassed in our sacred (?) media with a story of an officer involved shooting with microscopic reporting and fact twisting. But enough of that on this sacred site. And the public will learn more of that, then they will of your enormous sacrifice.

A suspect is running from the law, poses a lethal threat to the residents and is confronted by you, and because of your sacrifice, another piece of trash can no longer endanger the very people you swore to protect. Thank you for your bravery, courage, dedication and tenacity that exemplifies to the rest of the nation, just what their law enforcement officers are willing to do and give up, for them.

I am confident that you are home, looking down on the rest of us. I say home, because a hero never dies, they go home. And you, make no mistake about it, are a hero. The NYPD has been rightly called, “New York’s Finest”, and for damn good reason. As a former New Yorker, and a retired law enforcement officer myself, I am glad that we shared the greatest title we can be honored to have, and forever we are brothers in blue.

Before he passed away, my late dad gave me these words upon my graduation from the Police Academy, and I give them to you, and all of the NYPD: “Above all else, honor”. Rest in peace my brother, we have the watch, the “Thin Blue Line” will hold, and in your memory, may Almighty God bless you, the NYPD, and every police officer in this nation. “The candle of the wicked shall be put out forever”.

Sgt. Ron Tomassi, Retired
