Reflections for Police Officer Jose Gilbert Vega
Dear Jose:
What can I say that would help, make a difference or ease the pain I am certain your family now has to deal with? I wonder at times when we lose an officer to some act of cowardice by vermin such as this, why I survived my shooting many years ago, and you, and so many others have not?
I like to think that Almighty God has a plan for all of us, including you, and that something good will come from this cowardly act. Thank you for the professionalism you exhibited and the dedication to "protect and serve". What I find interesting is the fact that so few Americans will answer the cry of the wolf at the door, yet so many Americans owe so much to so few of us. You answered that call and paid the ultimate price.
I pray that your family will heal and Almighty God will bless them, our police officers everywhere, maybe, just maybe, the rest of the country will come to realize how much, not only we, but our families sacrifice to guarantee their safety and freedom.
Rest in peace, my brother, we have the watch.
