Reflections for Sergeant Steven C. Owen

I can’t even imagine what his family went through on October 5, 2016. In law enforcement you always go into work with the possibility of not coming back home but you never expect it to happen to you or a loved one. Sgt Steven Owen gave the ultimate sacrifice for our community and will always be remembered. He was an amazing deputy who really loved his job, and who was admired by many, he was someone people wanted to be like. My prayers go out to his family who will always be impacted. I want to thank him for his service and dedication to the department for 29 years.
This hit close to home because i was a LASD explorer at the Lancaster station and had seen him around or had heard of him because he would do so much for the explorer program even though he didn’t have to he did because he cared so much about the department and the future of the department. He did so much for the department as well as the community and everyone recognized that. He will never be forgotten. Sgt Owen may you rest in peace.

Learning about the way you lived your life motivates me to graduate this academy and become part of the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department family. We owe it to you, your family, and our own to become one as a class, learn, and become the best peace officers we can become to carry on with the mission. Reast easy sir!

Today I learned about Sgt . Steven Owen in class and really impacted me like I never believed. listening to the stories the Deputies had of him and all the things he did to have a positive impact in not only the deputies he worked with but the community and kids he dedicated himself to. Also, he was big in family as I am and I couldn't help to begin admiring him and I found my self looking up to him as inspiration. Sgt. Owen was strong, intelligent, worked with kids and had a positive impact with everyone he worked with.

I hope to one day become at least half the deputy Sgt. Own was. His story and body of work inspires me to work harder and dedicate myself more to not just my immediate family but also my new family in law enforcement. I want to make sure that I can have some positive impact in the communities I hope to police one day just as Sgt. Owen did.

Although I did not know Sergeant Owen personally, learning about his legacy on the departure has stuck with me the most, as if he was apart of my family, as he was to many throughout the department and the communities he served. His name was the first name I observed on the Los Angeles County Peace Officers Memorial Wall and It is with great honor to pay respect for such an outstanding deputy for the department I hope to be apart of one day. His story has impacted me to dig deep, remember my reasons why and push hard to graduate this academy to be apart of the greatest law enforcement agency like he once was. I salute Sergeant Owen for his duty and sacrifice. Thank you.

Sergeant Owen,

Thank you for taking a bullet for us civilians out there. Everyone thinks that only cops, explorers, and their families care when an officer goes down, but that is not the case. Us civilians do care, and we are forever grateful for your sacrifice. Thank you, Sergeant Owen. We all salute you.

From what I've heard Sgt. Owen was a prime example of what a peace officer should be; a public servant dedicated to serving his community and making it a little better everytime that he went 10-8. The law enforcement community was robbed of a great deputy. Sgt. Owen will be remembered and continue to be a role model for young recruits and deputies. My condolences go out to your family. RIP sir.
