It saddens me to know that we have lost a deputy in the line of duty. When I first heard of this tragedy I couldn't believe it. I was hearing the radio traffic and once I heard "998" on the radio, my heart started jumping and it made me want to go out there and help. Even though I never met Sgt. Owens, i still feel a great loss and can't imagine what is friends and family are going through. This really had an impact on me and makes me train even harder everyday. I heard a lot of great things about Sgt. Owen's and with a sad heart i say goodbye.

I did not know Sgt. Owen well for i had only met him a handful of times being an explorer. I can say that he was the most cheerful man and had the biggest smile that could make anyone happy. I truly am sadden from this loss. As someone who planned to patrol in Lancaster, i only wish i could have got to know him better and learn from one of the best. Rest in peace Sgt. Owen for the rest of us shall take on your watch and remember you always.

When I first heard one of our deputies had been involved in a shooting I automatically hoped for the best only to find out seconds later he suffered a severe gun shot wound to the cranium. I still had hope the deputy would pull through. Hours later I learned of the deputies fate. I shifted my focus to his family and then it hit me. Although like many others death scares me, what really scares me is that I would leave my wife without a husband, my kids without a daddy, my parents without a son, my siblings without a brother, my nephews without an uncle, my peers without a partner, and my friends without a friend. I pray for his family to grieve and pull out of this devastating tragedy. Sergeant Owen will be watching over them, I'm sure of it. because I don't know that I could in the same situation.

This also re enforces my willingness to serve the public and keep the evil at bay. Many others are like me and care for their families as much as I do mine. I must do what I can to ensure their safety during their most trying of times so their loved ones may see them once again.

Sergeant Owen I did not know you personally but I only continue hearing what an amazing public seveant you were. You are what I will strive to be and hope to build legacy as strong as yours with my peers and the public I swear to protect.

Rest In Peace sir and keep a watchful eye on your family. Lack of your presence will be felt for years to come.

I never had the pleasure and honor of knowing Sgt. Owens. However, from what classmates that were explorers for him and friends on the department that worked with him have shared, he was more than a deputy. He was a mentor, a teacher, a leader, and a great friend. I strongly believe that he will live on from the mark that he left as great inspirational deputy and a great leader that was willing to go out there and get the job done. He is a role model for the deputy that I one day can only dream of becoming.

I NEVER KNEW SERGEANT STEVE OWEN BUT THIS HITS HOME DUE TO THE FACT THAT I HAVE ALSO LOST A FRIEND BY A FATAL SHOOTING. I SERVED WITH OFFICER RICARDO GALVEZ FROM DOWNEY IN IRAQ, TOGETHER WE WERE IN THE MARINE CORPS. I AM CURRENTLY IN CLASS 417 AT THE BISCAILUZ REGIONAL TRAINING FACILITY – LOS ANGELES, CA. I HAVE HEARD MANY KIND WORDS OF SGT STEVE OWEN. I HOPE WE ALL CAN FOLLOW IN YOUR FOOTSTEPS AND BE THE TYPE OF MAN YOU WERE. YOU WILL BE IN OUR THOUGHTS FOR YEARS TO COME.
