Sergeant Steven Owen, who laid his life down for the safety and protection of others is an example to all those who aspire to walk in the shoes of Peace Officers. Though he did not seek to be honored, especially in these horrid circumstances, he deserves the highest honor to his title, his department, his family, and to the community. This honor came at a high cost, that is not taken lightly, or easily grieved. My thoughts and prayers are with the many impacted by the great loss of a loved deputy, community member, and family man.

We hope for a world of peace, where such sacrifice and pain can be avoided. Sergeant Owen admirably fought for this type of peace and empowers us all to follow in his selfless footsteps.

Sergeant Owen is a constant reminder to all of us to be the best that we can be. To always improve ourselves for the better and to give 100 percent to everything you do. Steven Owen lived his life like this and inspired others to do the same. This is apparent though the people that knew Steven Owen and how he impacted them in meaningful ways. As I progress through the LASD academy, I will remember the impact of Steven Owen and I will tell myself to keep pushing forward. This is what Steven Owen would have wanted from all of us.

I feel honored to be training to become a Deputy Sheriff and I know the best way to pay tribute to Sergeant Owen's memory is to work as hard as I possibly can while trying to assist as many people and partners as I can. I did not have the pleasure to meet sergeant Owen personally. But just learning about him and listening to deputies who he mentored and influenced makes me understand that he was an outstanding, one of a kind sergeant and friend. It was a great honor for me and my fellow recruit partners to be part of sergeant Owen’s Vigil and stand post yesterday. As a member of Class 442 i was made aware of Sergeant Owen by our Drill Instructors. I did some research on Sergeant Owen and found a man that i believe every one of us should try to be. Sergeant Owen gave everything for his community,his friends and family, and his fellow Law Enforcement brothers and sisters. As a Marine Corps military police officer I attended Police week with my family in our country’s capital. There I was introduced to Sgt Owen’s family and friends. I was profoundly moved by the support the LA county sherrif’s department community showed towards Sgt Owen’s family. Also listening to the stories about his life and the commitment he had to his department and community affirmed in me the choice to join LASD. Thank you Sgt Steven Owen and your family for paying the ultimate sacrifice protecting the community. You are the type of Deputy I inspire to be. I was an explorer at Lancaster station when Sergeant Steve Owen was killed. Seeing the community come together because of Sgt. Owen is something I will never ever forget. He made the ultimate sacrifice as a deputy. Everytime his name is said, I still get that same somber feeling I got on October 5th. Knowing the impact Sgt. Owen left on thousands of people in the community and the impact he made on the department is something that I will always aspire to do. Sgt. Owen was a great person and an amazing deputy. He will never be forgotten and he will forever be missed. As a recruit in the academy, when things get difficult, I will always be thinking of Sgt. Owen and the ultimate sacrifice he made to serve and protect the community he loved so much.

I can’t even imagine what his family went through on October 5, 2016. In law enforcement you always go into work with the possibility of not coming back home but you never expect it to happen to you or a loved one. Sgt Steven Owen gave the ultimate sacrifice for our community and will always be remembered. He was an amazing deputy who really loved his job, and who was admired by many, he was someone people wanted to be like. My prayers go out to his family who will always be impacted. I want to thank him for his service and dedication to the department for 29 years.
This hit close to home because i was a LASD explorer at the Lancaster station and had seen him around or had heard of him because he would do so much for the explorer program even though he didn’t have to he did because he cared so much about the department and the future of the department. He did so much for the department as well as the community and everyone recognized that. He will never be forgotten. Sgt Owen may you rest in peace.
