I wonder if his tragic dead could have been prevented. I would like to know if this was Governer Brown's great releases form the California Correctional system. Can is also be coupled with the lose of two of the Palm Springs Officers.

A day of Academy training was brought to a halt when the radio traffic of Sergeant Owen's incident was heard. LASD class 417 grieves the loss of such a great man and Sergeant. Sergeant Owen was an exemplary person both on and off duty, and he inspires all of the recruits just starting off careers in law enforcement to show the same dedication and commitment he did. The thin blue line just became thinner. We shall carry your memory for the rest of our careers and lives. Rest in peace Sergeant Owen.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Sgt. Owen. I never had a chance to meet him yet he's impacted my life in so many ways. Hearing how great a deputy he was makes me work harder everyday so that I can one day be as great of a man as he was. His impact on the community he served and those he served with is apparent by the amount of love and respect that has be shown. I can only hope that one day I can be as great of an inspiration as he was and still continues to be. Rest in peace Sgt. Owen.

Dear Sgt. Owen,
I never got the privilege of meeting you, but I have heard nothing but amazing things about how wonderful, courageous, inspiring, and helpful you were. I was watching the press conference after your passing, and Sheriff McDonnell said something about how all future recruits should aim to model themselves after you, because you encompassed everything that the LA County Sheriff’s Department stands for. I plan on doing just that. Hearing your story has awakened a fire inside me and a greater desire to make the world a better, safer place. You were extraordinarily brave and helpful, and I can only wish to be like you someday. I hope you know how big of a positive impact you’ve had on the world, not only in life, but also in your passing. Thank you for giving hope to those who never thought they’d feel hope again. You were a light in the dark for so many people and you will be missed and remembered every day. My thoughts and prayers are with your family and friends. Rest in Peace.

Sgt. Owen, I did not know you but you were a brother non the less. Thank you for your service and for making the ultimate sacrifice for your family and your community. All are just that much safer because of you.
May God be with your family and friends as you now patrol the streets of heaven. God obviously had a need for a man of your caliber at his side. Please say hi to my good friend Officer "JD" DeGuzman (San Diego Police Dept; EOW: July 28, 2016). He too is patrolling the street of heaven now.
Rest easy my brother. We have the watch.

I'M A FORMER RECRUIT FROM CLASS 417 FOR THE LOS ANGELES SHERIFF DEPARTMENT. WE SAT IN CLASS ON THE DAY THIS HAPPENED AND OUR DRILL INSTRUCTOR TURNED ON RADIO TRAFFIC FOR OUR CLASS TO HEAR. MY STOMACH BEGAN TO TURN AS I LEARNED WHAT WAS GOING ON. I FELT AS THOUGH I LOST ONE OF MY CLOSE FAMILY MEMBERS. I GET CHOKED UP IN MY THROAT EVERY TIME ANY ONE TALKS ABOUT THE INCIDENT. THE NEXT DAY OUR STAFF CAME IN AND TALKED ABOUT SERGEANT OWENS AND WHAT A GREAT MAN HE WAS! THEY TALKED ABOUT HOW HE WAS ONE OF THE BEST AND HOW HE CARED DEEPLY ABOUT PROTECTING THE COMMUNITY. BEING ABLE TO SEE THE COMRADERY AMONGST THIS DEPARTMENT IS VERY HEART WARMING. I STILL CANT BELIEVE IT AT TIMES. I PRAY EVERY NIGHT FOR HIS FAMILY. I DID NOT KNOW SERGEANT OWENS PERSONALLY BUT HE MADE A HUGE IMPACT IN MY LIFE.
SERGEANT OWENS YOU WILL ALWAYS BE REMEMBERED AS A HERO! A PERSON WHO PROTECTED LIFE AND PROPERTY DAY IN AND DAY OUT. A PERSON WHO MADE A DIFFERENCE ! THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE!

I had the pleasure of meeting Officer Owen a year ago, A man by hit by a car on a bicycle, I got out to help the injured man and call Police, while the suspect was trying to steal the injured mans groceries and flee the scene.
He fled but only got less than a block away from the scene. Officer Owen took my name and info in case they needed my testimony, and thanked me for caring to stop and help.
This man was very nice and shook my hand, the extra mile so to speak.
It was my honor to have talked to Sgt Owen this day, and my heart and prayers go out to his family, friends and the Lancaster Sheriff Dept.
Rest in Peace Sgt Owen, thank you for serving our community for the past 29 years, You will not be forgotten.

Thank you is not enough.. you served your community with strength, courage and compassion for 29 years with the LASD... and more of your life was given to the youth and community beyond your duty as an officer. You gave up much during this time and now you have paid the ultimate price. I'm sorry for the pain your family must now deal with as they navigate life without you. RIP
