Our thoughts and prayers extend across the miles to our family, both blood and blue. We know your pain and grieve your loss. Though we cannot be with you as you begin the difficult journey ahead, please know we are with you in spirit. A loss to one is a loss to all. Officer DeGuzman, I didn't know you, but I didn't have to know you to know that you were a great man and police officer. I grew up basically living at the old SDPD station in the police explorers and lost many of my extended family members of the San Diego Police Dept. to murder/suicide. When I heard about you and your partner, Officer Wade Irwin, I became very depressed. One of your cousins told me that you didn't like seeing people sad, "so make sure to look up and give him a smile for me," So, in your honor, even though my heart is extremely heavy, I will look up towards the sky and give you a huge smile. I once patrolled your streets and parks
to enforce a safer neighborhood for you and your families.

I was there to save you from near-death
When you were savagely beaten
at the hands of your childrens’ father
…and left for dead.

I stood next to your son & daughter
to ensure they arrived home safely
from bullying and those with bad intentions.

My partner and I helped you work through a tough situation
with your family
when asked to respond to a domestic disturbance…
Because…after all, everyone has troubles…
…I understand…
…I have a family as well…

I remembering pulling your cat to safety from drowning in your pool
and rescuing other pets from confined spaces
…too many to name…

It was nice to see you safe from that obnoxious man
Belligerent & high on drugs…
As he roamed the street
Eyes glassy, loud, full of anger & rage…& looking to provoke an altercation
But now, I know you are ok.

Traffic control isn’t always as relaxing as it looks…
The Eagles, Stones, U2…
I was glad to assist in walking you & your daughter across both intersections
On that gorgeous summer night
During rush hour when thing were crazy…
On your way to see Lou Gramm…

I will miss watching you and your peers
Walk across the stage to receive your D.A.R.E. certificates
Only one of a few proud milestones

When someone’s broken into your home
And you are there with your children alone…
I pray you are safe and able to get out or avoid the intruders by hiding
& have your gun ready to protect your family…

I was out there in the worst of it all
Without a second thought
To get you to a shelter
During that horrid hurricane and tornado
That tore your family’s home to shreds
& left your loved ones & pets scattered…
while I prayed my Own family was safe without me…

I’ve been there to try and protect your son & daughter
From drugs, firearms, and violence through the years…
& I remember when I inspired Both of them
to help people - as I do - and become officers.

Now, the sad truth is that
Many don’t respect us quite the same
Turning valued life into a video game
Trying to one-up the others…
Many carrying a sense of entitlement
To what they claim is rightfully theirs…
But…where I was raised…& years ago…
Respect is earned.
And interacting with adults and those in authority
went without saying…
Lately, there is deep hurt, anger, and violence
At the loss of lives
and there are targets on our backs…

I was proud and peaceful knowing I could do all that for you…
That is what I wanted…

But now…

Today…Your streets will go unmanned & unprotected
You will need to brave your neighborhood alone
Go to the store watching your back
or to the park with your children to watch them play
…but before you do,
Be sure to check the play area for any weapons someone may have left behind.

Today…I cannot protect you or your family
From the suspicious man who is lurking across the street
And driving by on multiple occasions…just waiting…

There is a prison break…two murderers at large in your area…
They could be anywhere…
Be alert if your children are out…
or you need to go somewhere on your own.
And be sure to secure your home tighter than Fort Knox.

Today…my heart breaks for you and your children
…laying bloodied and tattered on the pavement
and trapped in mangled metal because of that drunk…
Somebody will come for you, eventually…

When a vehicle plows through a crowd at a family festival,
Keep your loved ones close & who knows…
…maybe a citizen (licensed to carry)
will have good aim or know something about apprehension
in a way that will minimize the loss of lives.

Today…After working your long late-night shift…
Riding home on your bicycle & the driver of a vehicle loses control…
or has been out partying…
You awake on the side of the road (because the driver never stopped) badly hurt…
& barely clinging to life..
Just close your eyes & sit tight…quietly…
Maybe your family or friends will come looking for you…

Today…when your neighbor has had too much to drink
and he’s raping his wife/girlfriend
and beating his children
until they’re black & blue and unconscious…
You can hear their cries for help
…you know he’s violent…
…and there are weapons on site…
Maybe – by the grace-of-God…
when the torture has stopped…
they will still be alive.
Maybe.

Today…the woman abusing her animals goes free.
The animal’s been chained for days…
…unfed & left without water…
Knee-deep in snow and too weak to cry.
I’m sorry little four-legged friend…
…that I cannot be there for you.

Today…when your Grandmother has a stroke
or your Grandfather falls off a ladder in cardiac arrest,
I will be with them…only in spirit.

Today…I will not be able to be there for you
as that belligerent drunk in the restaurant
continues to ridicule & bully patrons to an obnoxious degree
looking for a fight & threatening their lives…
…maybe the Manager can step up…
…because today, I cannot be there for you…

Today…

I cannot be there for you…
Because, I was murdered in cold-blood…
…in the line of duty.

*I was ambushed & shot*

My partner would have been there to help you…
Only, he was ambushed & shot as well…
My heart breaks for you…
And I’m sorry that I cannot do what I set out to do…
But, we’ve been taken too early…
Before our time…

I almost made it…
After 30 years of service,
I was set to retire in 3 months…
Just to spend a little time with my wife…
Enjoying a cold drink in the breeze on the back porch…
Listening to our favorite songs…
Those moments are priceless
Especially aft. her being diagnosed with cancer…
We planned to travel to see our children and new Grandchildren
Out of state…

My partner’s bride
just gave birth to their new baby
only one month ago…
A little guy...
and a big sister in waiting…
They looked so proud & happy for their new family start…
He wasn’t even meant to be working that night…
He’d come in to work some OT.

I held him as we both lie calling…
“Officers down, Officers down..”
And we can hear the sirens…
We can feel the love and support…
as our Brothers and Sisters in Blue race to our sides…
But…the wounds are fatal…
And neither of us can hang on.

Murdered.
Shot in cold blood.
For only doing my job...

And only for This reason,
Today…
I cannot be there for you…

Because…
Any other time…
“I cannot be there for you..”
Said No Officer, Ever.

Rest easy…
And don’t ever forget
We are your Angels in Blue
Even in spirit.

God Bless everyone…
Be safe in your homes and on the streets,
and let the hatred & violence settle…
Be there for one another
regardless of race, uniform, religion, age or sex…
because BOTH Black and Blue are shooting and killing…
And BOTH Black and Blue are Dying…
The hatred and the bullets are the same color…
and pack the same lethal punch.

And because our generations of today and tomm.
need a sign of hope and promise
Make today count.

Because those of us who carry badges can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.
But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here,
Lord, It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't.....I'll understand.
There was silence all around the throne

As a Trustee for Care of Police Survivors in the U.K and last Sunday being our Remembrance Day with American colleagues joining us in the U.K this latest tragic death in San Diego brings home why we unite together at these sad times. Being a very regular visitor to San Diego i know the City and many people there well. I will be at IACP in San Diego in October and I know this and the many other Police killings will be properly remembered by delegates and exhibitors alike.
