I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save. I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.

Yours, very sincerely and respectfully,

Abraham Lincoln

Matt I am sorry it has taken me so long to do this. As I sit here and look at your EOW bracelet on my wrist, I struggle with the reality of your loss. I remember our days in Iraq crewing together in our Hawks, the long hours on your boat at lakes Belton and Conroe and the nights that we spent throwing back some beers talking about Football, trucks and fishing boats. I remember the first time you introduced me to your wife Dechia at my wedding and how excited you were when you found out you were going to be a father. I still have our last text conversation the week before you were taken from us. We spoke of the events happening in Baton Rouge and how we were both gonna be safe on the job. Some days I wish I would have never recommended that you join BRPD and regret writing you that letter of recommendation. But then I remember how proud you were to be a Police Officer and I know that like being a Marine and Soldier, it was truly your calling. I promise you brother that I will always look after Dechia, the girls and your new baby that you did not have the opportunity to meet. I will share all my memories of you with your children in the years to come and help them understand how great of a man their father was and how much you loved them. Rest easy now my brother, I have the watch for you both on the street and over your family. We will meet again some day in Fiddler's Green. Love you brother.

To the Gerard family, fellow officers, and all who call Matthew beloved, my heart goes out to all of you and may you find comfort in your loved ones and your strength in your faith. When my son was killed, the entire law enforcement community in our area embraced us in a circle of love and support, and I know you will receive the same support. It makes the unbearable less torturous, and I pray for your solace. I hope that your family knows that a nation mourned for you. This should never have happened.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the dedicated service Officer Gerard gave to his community and the citizens of Louisiana, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on July 17, 2016
