RIP Brother

As a native of Baton Rouge and a law enforcement officer in Texas my heart hurts for my brother and sisters in blue at the Baton Rouge Police Department. Rest in peace Deputy Brad Garagola you will not be forgotten.

My Daddy Wore Blue

When he went to work
He’d put on his clothes
With his polished belt
He would pull it closed

Mom fixed his hat
And his silver star
Then kissed his cheek
As he went to his car

Momma would cry
Sometimes at night
And I never knew why
She kept on a light

She would wait for him
To walk through the door
Then she’d hug him tight
And her heart would soar

I loved him so much
I thought my heart would burst
When he came home from work
I had to kiss him first

I didn’t understand
Until later in life
Why Mom worried so much
It was tough on his wife

I was too young
To understand
When all his friends
Wore a black armband

And now they wear it
For him today
Because my Daddy
Has gone away

Lord, how I miss him
And my heart still aches
‘Cause all I knew
Was that my Daddy wore blue

I’m sure God knew
That my Daddy wore blue

Avenue of the Fallen

Standing at attention in their class “A“uniforms, badges gleaming and shoes like glass, are your brothers and sisters of Law Enforcement. All of whom have previously paid the ultimate price.
Today, like many others, they welcome you to this wonderful place.
As you march down the Avenue of the Fallen, all eyes focus on you as if to say “it’s OK, you’re with your eternal partners.”
A salute is followed and a tear can be seen on so many faces.
Welcome, you served well.
Now come join us in the ranks, another is coming home.

I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save. I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.

Yours, very sincerely and respectfully,

Abraham Lincoln
