Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Detective Luis G. Fernandez

Lord Jesus, as we watch our nation’s brave law enforcement officers succumb to the wicked and evil in this world, it becomes difficult for us to pick up and move forward. Our communities are on the brink of exploding with tension. In light of the law enforcement officers who are no longer with us, I pray for endurance for our communities and law enforcement agencies. Carry us through this time of strife, that through our struggles, our bonds may grow even more unbreakable. In Your mighty and holy name, I pray. Amen.

“And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here am I! Send me.” [Isaiah 6:8 ESV]

“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” [Psalm 23:4 ESV]

Waking up every morning to a fire truck hitting my head and a little guy making siren sounds next to my ear. He always said " i'm going to be a fire man, a pilot and a police officer by the age of 5 !. I was not surprised since our father had been a police officer back in Cuba, therefore it run in our veins. Surely enough, being the dedicated man that he was, he full filled his dream and became a New York City Police officer years later both to our father's delight and mine as well. We were and are still proud of such decision. Lou was an avid baseball fan and loved the Yankees but hated when I called him "Lou" until I told him Lou Piniella played for the Yanks then he changed his mind about his name. Lou was the quiet hero who never bragged about his impressive accomplishments while in the force. We found out about it during his eulogy during his funeral by all his fellow officers. He was the perfect husband, outstanding father, loving son and a great brother. I will always miss and love this great guy who was my baby brother and old enough to be my first son. Hope to see you in heaven. Love you.

John 5:28, 29 - "Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out". I pray that everyone can find peace in knowing that we will see this officer as well as many others again in Paradise soon. Until then, please accept my condolences.

Unbelievable how life is, I grew up with Det. Luis G. Fernandez in Astoria Queens, we went to the same school PS171 and today as I got my NYPD 2017 calendar and looking through it I saw his face and started looking into the Internet to find out more information. WoW I didn't know and now I have 13 years on the job at the 23pct and to know that he did 23 years. I just can't believe it, he was so full of life, I'm heart broken but god needed him for a reason. Rest in peace my friend, sorry I never got to say see you in heaven.

I knew Luis from working in the NYPD. We graduated in the same academy class and always seemed to wind up bumping into each other throughout the years. My last memory of him was when flight 1549 landed on the Hudson River. He was in ESU and I was in the Detective Squad. Dressed in a suit, I asked him for a harness. He smiled as he went on his way towards the water. His death, like all others, left me saddened. He was a good man and a great cop. We will meet again. Fidelis Ad Mortem.
