RIP Brother.

So that morning I came in on duty mad at the world cause you know, I always have to angry at something stupid. You know since there isn't anything going on that's any more important. Anyway, after muster that morning, Mr. Barraza came up to me to ask me how I was doing and that he had heard that I was upset. Now why the hell did he do that? He doesn't know me from Adam. We don't hang out. We're not best friends. Sure we worked together but didn't hang out outside work hours. That was Joey that's why. He cared about his coworkers, he cared about people. If you weren't lucky enough to meet him. Let me tell you. His personality and charm would instantly light up a room. Not knowing it would be the last time I would see him. You know since I'm so self centered and selfish I just brushed him off by saying "oh yeah I was upset earlier". And in that final gesture taught me the most important thing about being an Agent. It's not how many bodies you cut or catch. It's not how good you are are at processing or even how much time you have in ( a lot of senior Agents love that one!). It's about looking out for your teammates. Caring about your coworkers. And it came to him, naturally. I'm so sorry for not being able to day goodbye friend. Not being there to pray over you in your final moments. I was trying to get to you but because of my stupidity I was not able to get to you in time. I now have to live with that. I hate and resent the fact that it took so long for a f#^*ing loader to you!! Thank you for making those long nights and days at the checkpoint so much faster. Your jokes and wise cracking and your company was something to look forward to. You will be greatly missed my friend. I look forward to saying my final goodbye at your memorial.

Sad to hear this. The officers and agents on the border do their best to stand between the nation and its enemies. One cannot die in a better cause, but the families of the men and women who are lost bear a great burden of loss and sadness. They also bear the right to be proud of their spouse, of their parent, of their sibling, or of their child. Law enforcement is, much like the military, a family. We pray for the fallen, even if we are retired

Sending up prayers right now for Joey's wife, their 2 young children, his mom and all his LEO family. It's just gut-wrenching. We've lost so many this year...but that's Heaven's gain. We'll see you again when we get there. God bless you Joey and thank you for all you did to keep us safe.

In Honor of your Sacrifice and for your family and friends, I salute you as a HERO! May God
Give the family and friends the strength and faith to deal with this tragic loss. Words can not express my sorrow!

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.
