A true hero never strays, grits his teath and confronts his fears. He copes with his deamons when that is confronted while he works and tries not to bring them home to his family even though it hurts.
He always put the safety of others, the family, friend and yes even the stranger you have never met above your own. To protect and serve is the moto he lives by and will also die for and never complain. So here passed one more true hero making the ultimate sacrifice in the attempt to protect those he loved and those he never knew. God rest his soul in your kingdom, we will never for get him nor his or any other fallen officers sacrifice.

The Last Inspection

The Sheriff's Deputy stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass,
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now deputy,
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My Church have you been true?"

The deputy squared his shoulders and
said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who protect and serve,
Can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
And at times my talk was tough,
And sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully rough.

But, I never took a penny
That wasn't mine to keep...
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep,

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear,
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here,
They never wanted me around,
Except to calm their fears.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand,
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't, I'll understand."

There was a silence all around the throne,
Where the saints had often trod,
As the deputy waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.

"Step forward now Sheriff's Deputy,
You've borne your burdens well,
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in Hell."

Deputy Sheriff Koontz paid the ultimate price for being a servant of the people. He was sworn to protect and serve. He knew the dangers and faced them head on. He died doing a job that most people would run from. Law enforcement officers run towards the criminals while society runs away. It takes the bravest of men and women to serve. God bless his family in their time of suffering. He will never be forgotten.
