Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Corporal Nathaniel Alan Carrigan

It is so sad to see any officer down, and it hurts me quite a bit that anyone would have the gall to leave a family behind without the principal breadwinner. RIP & my condolences to the family.

The people of Park County have lost one of their best servants. I know that you have touched many lives throughout yours. A piece of me has gone with you.

You were an explosive powder keg of strength, you showed me that on the football field. You were the first to smile, the first to help, and the last to complain.

I will miss you Nate.

We will take the watch...rest in peace brother.

Nate,

It's always tough saying goodbye to a classmate. I haven't seen you since we graduated but I remember it like it was yesterday. Six months of grueling night classes, we relied on you to be that stress relief valve. Thank you for that. You were one of the few of us that knew exactly where you wanted to be when you graduated. The citizens of Park County were lucky to have you. Rest in peace brother.

Officer Jason Alvarado (Ret)
Denver Police Dept.

"The Final Inspection"
The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"
The policeman squared his shoulders and said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.
But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here,
Lord, It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't.....I'll understand.
There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."

Nate: I'm going to miss the sound of your airhorn every time you drove past the house (day or night, any hour), all the car-to-car visits and the "this is just Nate to Dan, right, not corporal to captain" conversations over the phone.
I never told you this, but you were a role model for me-the way you took care of your guys, how you joked and poked, were a terror with photoshop, but still ripped a car door off to pull a kid out of a wreck. You were the kind of cop we all should strive to be-the compassionate warrior and you were damn good at it.
Rest easy, brother, we'll take it from here with you on our minds and in our hearts. But there's a hole here that can never be filled.
