Reflections for Major Gregory Eugene Barney
Major Barney gave a young angry kid who was trying to better his life a second chance back in 2003. I went on to serve in the U.S. Army in the Special Forces Regiment and now I am retired. I remember his words that day after he talked to my recruiter. He told me, "Don't make me regret this." I carried that through my entire career in the Army and even after my service. He was a pivotal part of my motivation to keep striving for excellence. I am thankful for the kindness he demonstrated to me that day.

I worked for Riverdale Police Department for over 2 years. While there I would say Major Barney and I were friends. Both being from Southern New Jersey. I admired your friendship and your professionalism. I remember the day like it was yesterday. The running the smell in the air. I miss you. You were a influence on my life and I won’t forget you. I’ll never forget what you told me. “They won’t give it to you, so you have to go take it.” I appreciate you, miss you, until we meet again.

I never had the chance to meet you unfortunately. I remember the day you were shot like it was yesterday. I had just moved to Atlanta. I was set to begin the Atlanta Police Academy the following month. Your sacrifice was a huge wake up call to me. This was the first time I had seen a law enforcement officer make the ultimate sacrifice so close to home. Rest in Peace Brother.

John 5:28, 29 - "Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out". I pray that everyone can find peace in knowing that we will see this officer as well as many others again in Paradise soon. Until then, please accept my condolences.

On behalf of my family, I extend our sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you suffered when Greg was killed.
To the Barney family, fellow officers, and all who call Greg beloved, my heart goes out to all of you and may you find comfort in your loved ones and your strength in your faith. When my son was killed, the entire law enforcement community in our area embraced us in a circle of love and support, and I know you will receive the same support. It makes the unbearable less torturous, and I pray for your solace.
This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the dedicated service Major Barney gave to his community and the citizens of Georgia, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on February 11, 2016.
