I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save. I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.
Yours, very sincerely and respectfully,
Abraham Lincoln

Amy, I hope that some day you will be able to read these things to your daughters.
I did not know Jason on a deep level as many do. But I saw the way he touched lives. Jason worked many cases with my detectives and as a result spent lots of time around our shop. The infectious glint in his eye always made you wonder what he was going to say next. He was a joy to have around the office and a credit to the profession. Since Friday, I have told many people that Jason was a "10" He is the type of officer I hope this profession cherishes. People like him are the future of policing.
My son has recently entered the profession. I got to work the vigil last night with him watching over you and your family. I watched the way that he kept watch and saw that it was good and honorable. I hope that both he and I will live up to Jason's example and help our communities to be just a little better than they would be without us.
