I'll never forget reading the teletype alerting all Ohio agencies that you had been killed. The immediate feeling of anger and resentment was replaced by relief once your killer was arrested. You had no idea this shift would be your last. But reading the stories of your life, you will leave a legacy that will never be forgotten. Every day for the rest of my career, I will remember that teletype and the sacrifice you made. Rest in peace brother, your family is in my thoughts and prayers.

The Village of Danville, OH mourns the loss of Police Officer Thomas Cotrell. It is with a heavy heart to see a police officer get shot and killed by someone who has hatred for the police. A village mourns and so does the poiice department. I remember the day I heard that a small town police officer in my area lost his life ten years ago and I gave him a final salute as his funeral procession went by. It will be a time where the family, the mayor, the village trustees, the village justice, the police department and everyone will be on hand to say a very sad goodbye to this brave police officer who lost his life serving and protecting his community from harm's way. For the guy who did this, it will be a one way trip to death row after being found guilty by a jury and facing a judge for this awful crime he committed.
