I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save. I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.

Yours, very sincerely and respectfully,

Abraham Lincoln

Words are always hard to find, during the loss of a friend, husband, father and a truly good, compassionate cop - that was ripped from us so early. Although nothing anyone will say, can assuage the grief Steve's family and friends must feel, know that the entire law enforcement family in Minnesota and beyond revere and remember Steve's sacrifice now and forever.

Rest in eternal peace, with God, brother. 10-7 EOW

From all of us at the West Concord, MN Police Department

May God bless your soul my brother.....Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle, be our protection against the malice and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan and all evil spirits who wander through the world for the ruin of souls. Amen.

I am truely sorry for the loss of Investigator Steve Sandberg. Prayers go out for Him, His Family and His Department. This is a tragic. I feel that some departments think that it can't happen here. This is a horrible example, that it can. May God take good care of Officer Sandberg.

Minnesota has lost another peace-keeper. Minnesota has lost another man devoted to his community. Minnesota has lost another officer who showed his love for helping those in need. Minnesota has lost another.......I pray for the family and friends of Officer Sandberg. I pray for the Aitkin Sheriff's Office and the dedicated officers that make up the Aitkin Sheriff's Office. I pray for the community of Aitkin. And I pray that this is the last LODD.

In my first year of law enforcement (as a very green rookie), I had the wonderful opportunity to become deputized in Aitkin County, MN, for 6 months while I worked as a Special Agent for the state Narcotics Enforcement Task Force. Aitkin County had experienced a traumatic shoot out scenario years earlier - the Sheriff recounted the tragedy as a moment that changed his life forever. Later I served as the one of two of the first female members of our State LEMA Honor Guard. I left my beloved profession early after being badly assaulted in the line of duty when an assailant tried to snap my neck in two. In a second, life changes. I will never forget those who put their lives on the thin blue line daily with a willingness to protect and serve. Deputy Steven Sandberg - may your spirit sing as an eternal angel that protects others. ~RIP~ Blessed be the Peacekeepers.

A police officer should be remembered not by how he died, but how he lived! A great man has gone to secure a safe path for the rest of us to follow. Thank you to you, your family and the Aitkin County Sheriff's Office. Our country is a little less safe without you. Rest in Peace Brother!
