Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Dwight Darwin Maness

I was working for Island Lake Police Department when he and his partner were shot but I was not on duty. I remember him fondly and I wish him peace from my "new" police department in South Carolina.

Dwight was my lead Drill Sergeant in basic training at Ft. Knox back in '99, He told us on day one that he would never tell us to do anything he wasn't willing to do himself. He proved it when he spent 2 hours in the gas chamber with me, no mask, matching every push-up, "tony-little", and flutter kick. CS had no effect on either of us and by the time he was done smoking me, there was a fair amount of brass waiting outside the chamber. One of my fondest memories of my time in service. Don't know what made me look him up after 25 years but I just learned of his passing today, almost 9 years after his EOW. Rest easy Drill Sergeant Maness.

I met your daughter Lauren briefly at a COPs bicycle ride for one of our cities fallen officers. She brings healing and hope with her, she is a light in our blue community. While we hate the circumstances that lead us to these people - we are grateful for the people. Your sacrifice is not forgotten.

I pray that everyone can find peace in knowing that we will see this officer as well as many others again in Paradise soon. Until then, please accept my condolences.

On behalf of my family, I extend our sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you suffered when Dwight died.

To the Maness family, fellow deputies, and all who call Dwight beloved, my heart goes out to all of you and may you find comfort in your loved ones and your strength in your faith. When my son was killed, the entire law enforcement community in our area embraced us in a circle of love and support, and I know you will receive the same support. It makes the unbearable less torturous, and I pray for your solace.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the dedicated service Deputy Maness gave to his community and the citizens of Illinois and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on September 14, 2015.

My deepest condolences to Deputy Maness family, friends, and colleagues. As for the evil, the bible states at Proverbs 4:16,17, "For they cannot sleep unless they do what is bad. They are robbed of sleep unless they cause someone's downfall. They feed themselves with the bread of wickedness, and they drink the wine of violence." Many in this violent world have no regard of life, especially those that serve as "secular authorities" . Revelation 21:3,4 reads "he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away". I pray God's promise of reversing death brings comfort to all who knew Deputy Maness.

On behalf of my family, I extend our sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you suffered when Dwight died as a result of his injuries sustained eleven months earlier when he was brutally ambushed.

To the Maness family, fellow deputies , and all who call Dwight beloved, my heart goes out to all of you and may you find comfort in your loved ones and your strength in your faith. When my son was killed, the entire law enforcement community in our area embraced us in a circle of love and support, and I know you will receive the same support. It makes the unbearable less torturous, and I pray for your solace. I hope that your family knows that a nation mourned for you.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the dedicated service Deputy Maness gave to his community and the citizens of Illinois , and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on September 14, 2015.
