The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, policeman.

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.
But I never took a penny,

Losing a member of the Law Enforcement family is never easy. There's always the shock, the sadness, the anger and the realization, "there but for the Grace of God, go I." But when it's a member of our subgroup, our Campus Family, for those of us patrolling the college and university campuses of America, it's especially heart wrenching. We work someplace "safe" where bad things can't happen. It happened to you, Officer Heywood, I mourn your passing, and I pray for all those who know and love you best.
