It is difficult to find words of comfort in this murder of an Officer, a wife, and a new Mother. I can only imagine how deep this grief will affect so many and her beloved husband. I ask Lord that you be a tangible blanket of mercy and comfort for her family, blood and blue. My heart grieves with you...

THE JOURNEY OF THE PROTECTOR
Every day that a police officer puts on their uniform and hits the street, death is a stalking shadow that silently follows their every move. When the shadow descends, another blue soul is led to heaven while those who loved them are left to grieve. I sat tonight at my desk, gazing at the photograph of a woman whose face was framed by cliffs that have survived thousands of years, bearing a smile that revealed a strength of spirit that would never allow the reality of her job as a Police Officer to touch the lives of her husband and children. I sipped more whiskey than I should have in the darkness as my thoughts traveled to the home that Officer Kerrie Orozco of the Omaha Police Dept. shared with her family and felt the all too familiar ache of loss. The knowledge that tomorrow she was to begin her maternity leave to care for her newborn child tore into my heart and left me awash in a sea of anguish.
I've never met Officer Orozco and yet I knew her. I knew her because she embodied the soul and warrior spirit of those I served with whose sacrifice still stain my heart. I knew the pain and disbelief that was enveloping her family because I have held the hands of the wives and embraced the sobbing children of friends who also took the final journey while protecting the people that they swore to protect. Tonight I too grieve as do thousands of other men and women who have shared the journey of the protector. I wish you Godspeed Officer Kerrie Orozco. It is your End of Watch. You have done your duty. The weight of loss doesn't get any lighter. You just learn to carry it better. My hope is that the family, friends, and fellow officers can move from devastated and sorrowful, to celebrating Kerrie's life sooner rather than later. Detective Orozco, you are the best of us, and we salute you.

Rest in Peace, My Sister. Your courage, commitment, service and sacrifice shall not be forgotten.

Saint Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle;
be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray:
and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host,
by the power of God,
thrust into hell Satan and all the evil spirits
who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls.
Amen.
