Reflections for Detective Terence Avery Green

"The Final Inspection"

The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"
The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges
can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.v
But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here,
Lord, It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't.....I'll understand.
There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."

For Officer Terence Avery Green:

The law-officer on patrol responds to assignments at once after the call is dispatched. Rarely does he/she have the advantage of adequate time, planning and the equipment utilized in a hostage situation, a robbery-in-progress call or in any incident where command is set-up at the scene. He/she usually has to go it alone or with his/her a partner. The results, as in this case, can be devastating - yet it is our lot. The patrol-officer is the first line of defense in a police emergency.
We regret that our brother Terence would be the next law-officer to fall while serving and protecting the public. We pray for his family, co-workers, friends and all who care about him. May they be ready to reach-out to one another in the days ahead.
We are proud to render Officer Terence Green, a soldier-of-the-law, a final salute.

So sad a fellow officer is gunned down by an idiot who showed the signs of trouble for a long time. This veteran of the military and police force will surely be missed.

May God rest his soul. In police work you do it for the love of helping people but the very same people you help do not return the favor of helping the police do a job that very few people can do. As a retired police officer I know how officer Green felt. I pray for the family that God will help them through this terrible loss.
