Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Detective Melvin Vincent Santiago

The suspect will never be missed by civilized human beings. You, Officer Santiago will be missed, not only by all who know and love you best, but by ALL civilized human beings who know that it was your selfless attention to duty that caused you to make the ultimate sacrifice.

Those you have left behind will mourn, probably forever, but so long as they keep you in their hearts and minds and believe, you will always be there for them.

God Bless you and may you forever Rest in Peace, Brother.

The salvation of the righteous comes from the Lord;
he is their stronghold in time of trouble.
The Lord helps them and delivers them;
he delivers them from the wicked and saves them,
because they take refuge in him.

As a parent of a current Jersey City Police Officer, I worry every time my child goes out on the streets. Although I and my child did not know Melvin, I feel for his loss. I cannot fathom the loss that his family is feeling. From what I've read, Melvin always wanted to be in law enforcement. He has passed doing what he loved, trying to make this a better city. It does not make it any easier for the family or friends. But know that I and many of Jersey City's residents truly grieve with you. God Bless.

My wife and I have known Melvin for about 5 - 6 years. Co - workers from his previous employer said being a P.O. for JC was his dream. He was THE nicest person, in a long time, that I have had the pleasure of meeting. He was always gracious and ecstatic when I would give him one of my Honor Legion courtesy cards. JC is short one cop's cop tonight. He was my friend, my BROTHER, my HERO. Condolences to your Immediate Family as well as the Jersey City Police Department Family

In Honor of your Sacrifice and for your family and friends, I salute you as a HERO! May God
Give the family and friends the strength and faith to deal with this tragic loss. Words can not express my sorrow!

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Avenue of the Fallen

Standing at attention in their class “A“uniforms, badges gleaming and shoes like glass, are your brothers and sisters of Law Enforcement. All of whom have previously paid the ultimate price.
Today, like many others, they welcome you to this wonderful place.
As you march down the Avenue of the Fallen, all eyes focus on you as if to say “it’s OK, you’re with your eternal partners.”
A salute is followed and a tear can be seen on so many faces.
Welcome, you served well.
Now come join us in the ranks, another is coming home.

Maybe God needs His best soldiers somewhere else right now. I know our loved ones are sad when they look down and see us sad. Maybe they say; "Lets be happy and grateful for the love we shared and the memories we took the time to make and then let us pray for the souls that will never know those gifts. We will all see each other again at end of trail. Lean on those that love us and share our earthly loss for they will help you bring out your greatest strength."

Love transcends all things.
Time, space and even our passing.

I know this to be true as I feel my departed grandmothers touch on my arm and hear her calming voice.

With respect and prayers for strength.
You are not alone.
Godspeed.
