Woke up this morning and still couldn't believe this. I know everyone believes in fate and I do too. But this wasn't meant to be, not yet and not like this. What people don't know is that even though Melvin was a rookie, he was GREAT at the job and I already knew he had a promising future. When he spoke to people in the community he was ALWAYS respectful. I admired him so much and loved working with him. I will forever cherish all the days, hours, minutes, and seconds I was blessed to know him. I can't believe we will never have our talks in the radio car again, those 8 hours always flew. He will always have a place in my heart and will never be forgotten. #Class109 #WestMidnights

Its very sad upon seeing any officer killed in the line of duty, but its even worst when its a young officer at the start of his career. I can't imagine what his training officer is going through as I also trained young officers. I just read that the community where this happen is calling the suspect a hero. When we the brotherhood in blue know the man that took Officer Melvin Santiago's life is a coward. May god bless you and your family rest in peace...my brother

It is a great sorrow to loose such a distinct man. He is a hero and has serve this country, the state of New Jersey and the city of Jersey City with honor. He will not be forgotten ... my only hope is that his family with find peace and comfort in the coming days.
Putting on the uniform carries with it a great responsibility, shows ones character, which is often neglected by the community it serves.
Officer Melvin Santiago's death is not in vain - it is instead a reminder of those who serve have a higher calling. He respond to a call - to protect the community at large and paid with his life.

So young and with such a great future ahead. Certainly a tragedy. RIP Officer Santiago.

What is even more tragic is that the assassin's wife attempted to place the blame on Officer Santiago by suggesting he would have been safe had he only stayed in his patrol vehicle.

With an increase in the mentally unstable yet armed public, the men and women in uniform need to be ever more vigilant.

Please go safely - everyone.
