As a sheriff mo who's son was almost taken..... Sometimes I wish I could help ease the pain for them. I remember being in that plane on my way to Maryland. They didn't know your condition or they knew it was pretty bad, but I trusted him and accepted the outcome with faith that it would be the right thing. I put it in his hands and prayed. I smiled at the officer who picked me up and drove me to the airport. We were on the 105 during rush hour traffic. He was driving 70-80 on the emergency lane. All I could think about was getting to you. I was in these families shoes. I know how we dread a day like this. but we also understand that your job is to help others. To keep others safe. And to be willing to give your lives. Sometimes other people don't see the big picture.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Avenue of the Fallen
Standing at attention in their class “A“uniforms, badges gleaming and shoes like glass, are your brothers and sisters of Law Enforcement. All of whom have previously paid the ultimate price.
Today, like many others, they welcome you to this wonderful place.
As you march down the Avenue of the Fallen, all eyes focus on you as if to say “it’s OK, you’re with your eternal partners.”
A salute is followed and a tear can be seen on so many faces.
Welcome, you served well.
Now come join us in the ranks, another is coming home.

Scott, I met you last year in a class I taught. After the class, we shook hands and parted ways. Your accident happened just a mile and a half from my house. I was glad to hear when you went home, and my heart broke when I got the call yesterday. Stockton was blessed to have you on our streets protecting us and now we are blessed to have you looking over us from above. I could never thank you enough for all your service and your ultimate sacrifice. You will be forever in our thoughts and prayers. And may your family and extended family find comfort knowing you are watching over them from above. RIP brother.
