IN MEMORY OF OFFICER MARK H. LARSON
To the family, friends, and colleagues of Officer Mark H. Larson:
From the beginning of time after Cain killed his brother, Abel, there has been a need for law enforcement officers to protect the weak and to bring evildoers to justice. This work is necessary in a sinful world and is dangerous. In modern times, some seven hundred and seventy-three law enforcement officers have given their lives to protect the citizens of the State of Florida. Today we honor Officer Mark H. Larson’s sacrifice.
Lord God, we are grateful for the life of Officer Mark H. Larson. He died serving us. Help us never to forget. Help us celebrate Officer Mark H. Larson’s life and honor his sacrifice. Be with the family, friends, and colleagues of this fallen hero. Comfort them and give them your strength. Guide those who seek to take care of the family of this hero. May those empowered to do so, care for them with integrity. In commemorating the death of this hero, help those who mourn to remember that death is not the end. Death does not have the final say, but is simply the transition to the glorious life to come. They should look forward to that life to come with joy and thanksgiving.
As for the citizens of Jacksonville, help them to faithfully equip their law enforcement officers with the best tools to protect their county. May their training be adequate to the task. Help the citizens of Jacksonville to remember to pay their law enforcement officers fairly and treat them with respect. Help the citizens of Jacksonville to obey the law and treat each other with dignity so as not to add to the burden of crime and pain to their county.
The time for mourning will soon pass. We have now remembered and celebrated the life lost in this great tragedy. As the family, friends, and colleagues of Officer Mark H. Larson go forward, they must celebrate the good things in their lives; and to celebrate life itself! Lord God, hear our prayers. Amen.
Now, may the Lord bless you, and keep you: the Lord make His face to shine upon you, and be gracious unto you: the Lord lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace. Amen.
In His merciful love,

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Officer Mark H. Larson,
When you made your decision to enter law enforcement some twenty-nine years ago you became blessed:
For the Lord said, "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God." Matthew 5:9 ESV
When you initiated a traffic stop within your jurisdiction on January 25, 1993, you answered God's call to serve:
And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then I said, "Here am I! Send me." Isaiah 6:8 ESV
As a result, you were intentionally dragged by the fleeing vehicle as the driver held onto to you while ramming your body into a guardrail and other fixed objects. Finally, on March 24, 2014, you succumbed to the extensive injuries you sustained back on January 25, 1993 during that traffic stop; sacrificing your life alone so that others might live and be protected:
And the Lord said, "Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends." John 15:13 ESV
I, along with your family, friends and comrades, will mourn your sacrifice and loss in the line of duty:
And the Lord said, "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted." Matthew 5:4 ESV
Now go! Rise up! And do battle against Satan and his demons as an angel for the Lord!
In God's merciful love,

I investigated this tragedy and have witnessed this man's courage firsthand. The vocation to law enforcement is a call to heroism, at times drastic. Mark experienced such a time. The 'Thin Blue Line' was diminished with his separation from the duty he dearly loved. Sadly, we are all diminished in his passing. Resquiat en pace dear brother.
