Reflections for Police Officer Michael Alexander Petrina

Was just thinking of you brother. We're still holding the line down here. Miss you!

As I was thinking about the day, it dawned on me, that on an interstate in Nashville, 10 years ago, I was out with a young officer, Michael Petrina, when he died. It changed his family’s life, as well as, mine forever. When Officers In Training go through our academy today, they see a name on a wall, not really really understanding the supreme sacrifice that was made for the city of Nashville. I shall remember Michael for the remainder of my days…truly a fine young man!

On today, the 10th anniversary of your death I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice-not just for your Community but for our Country as well when you served with the TNARNG. And to your Family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.

I remember Mike. I was in the Criminal Justice class as he was at the University of Memphis. I asked him once what I should do with my life. My family was pulling me in a different direction than law enforcement. He told me to do what I wanted . I am receiving the star of life award this year as a part of a team that saved a teenager's life.

Thanks man

Mike. It has been four long years. Just over four years since we had a conversation in the parking lot right after you got to South Precinct about the set up of my take-home car. You were so upbeat. I was in a rut and your positivity brought me up. I’ll never forget thinking how easily this could’ve been me. I have your name’s etching from the memorial on the wall at my desk. Even thought I left Metro I’ll never forget how profound an impact you had on me. 2014 was a rough year for us. I think about you all the time. Miss you, brother.

Thinking of you today brother. I've made it my focus to write every Move Over violation I witness in hopes of deterring others to not repeat history. You are on my mind often & I salute your highway sign every time I drive by. I hope you are up there keeping watch over all of us down here. Rest In Peace brother. You are not & will never, be forgotten.

Mike was a kind soul. I worked with him the last three months while in the South Precinct. I’ll never forget the phone call asking if I’m ok and learning that someone on the shift I was leaving that day had been killed. I didn’t work with Mike long but I definitely lost a friend. I pray that his close friends, fellow Army, and family will find the ability to find peace on the anniversary of such a tragic loss.
I still can’t erase your contact out of my phone, save me a spot up in heaven brother.

Officer Petrina, at the time of your death I was a 29 year old 4 year veteran of a neighboring agency. Your death
rang a bell with me. You died on my birthday, I will always remember your sacrifice for this reason. I was in my living room having some coffee before going out for a birthday lunch with my wife. I saw on the news a metro officer was killed and my heart sank. You never got a chance to turn 29 like I did on that day. I recently left law enforcement after nearly 7 years. I drive past the site at which you paid the ultimate price and many times I silently say a prayer for your loved ones. As long as I roam this earth you will not be forgotten.

Just dropped off some property at South Precinct and as always I take a moment to look at your memorial picture framed on the wall of the Roll Call room. I'm glad someone who visited the Wall in DC took the time to etch your name on paper and allow the rest of us to see it.

I think of you often brother. It's getting crazy down here with police work. Watch over all of us.

God Speed.

Time may have passed but you are not forgotten. I believe as long as someone remembers you or speaks your name, you are still with us.

I have been thinking about you a lot lately brother. You and your family have been in my thoughts and prayers over the holidays. A new officer was recently awarded the first ever "Michael Petrina Leadership Award" in your honor. I think that just highlights what everyone already knew about you man! Keep a watchful eye over us down here...lately we need it!

Rest In Peace brother man!

I remember reading about this when it happened. Too many officers lose their lives in the line of duty. I worry all the time about my son, who is a Tn. State Trooper. He has been hit 2 times by drivers that didn't move over and nearly lost his life. My condolences for all police that lost their lives performing their duty to protect & serve.

Michael,
I am teaching the trainees of session 76 their introduction to officer survival today, as you know I start that class off by going over each fallen Nashville Officer. I absolutally hate, and it makes me sick to have to add your name into the lecture brother.
RIP and as you always said "Motivation Check"

On behalf of my family, I extend our sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you suffered when Michael was killed.

To the Petrina family, fellow officers, and all who call Michael beloved, my heart goes out to all of you and may you find comfort in your loved ones and your strength in your faith. When my son was killed, the entire law enforcement community in our area embraced us in a circle of love and support, and I know you will receive the same support. It makes the unbearable less torturous, and I pray for your solace.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the dedicated service Officer Petrina gave to his community and the citizens of Tennessee, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on May 10, 2014.
